Hatch Support - Wooden

Postby Strop » Sun Sep 21, 2014 5:42 am

Hi,

I have been looking at various designs and came across this YouTube video that shows a wooden hatch support right at the start.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_F9BNopJrIQ

I am of not sure if this is a home build or commercial build, but I am interested in the wooden hatch support. I have not seen plans for it or any discussion related to it. Can anyone provide me feedback on it please or even some plans of directions on how yo build it.

Thanks

Laurie

Obviously a commercial build when you watch it with volume. :? :frightened:

Camp Inn is a commercially built product.

Drewh1, and others, have incorporated their style of of hatch support. Here are a couple of links to applicable entries in his build thread.

Chose your wood wisely and don't try to make it too svelte. The hatch has a big sail area and the leverage from the long length of the hatch vs. the hinge location relative to the strut anchor point can be a significant force multiplier.

Drew did a great job on his build. The whole thread is worth a read!

Thank you for that link, I had missed that build.

I suppose the real advantage of struts over the wooden support Drew has made is that you can't really drop the hatch and have it slam shut with all the possible consequences

Tha advantage of the wooden strut is you shouldn't have to replace them and they look a bit smart also 8) . Cheaper also.

Just had a thought as typing this I suppose a tight fit would provide a degree of friction to prevent the slam but dow no side is difficult to open.

Thanks

Another advantage is that the strut finds its resting perch automatically so there is no fiddling with storage keepers or aligning sockets, etc.

Rather than trying to make a precision fit slot to add some friction, I would consider making an adjustable braking/friction/tension mechanism at the sliding pin. But that's not really how these were meant to work. Wood props of any style are truly only effective for light weight hatches that are easily managed by hand. If you plan on a larger hatch, or tank like construction, then some sort of assisted strut would be recommended.

Grumman 2 design with lightest material I can find. Skinned in Fibreglass sheeting.

Will have to pull the calculator out to guess the weight.
