Help me seal my hatch!

Postby Shoprat » Wed Oct 08, 2014 9:16 pm

Ok so this is my first build obviously and I have somehow screwed up the hurricane hinge install that I bought from grant. I read a bunch and thought I had it figured out but once I cut it and installed all my molding I realized something wasn't right! So now it leaks.... There is a gap right at the hinge which I tried to goop some shoe glue into for a quick fix before an overnight trip but I need to fix this right! Obviously the goop didn't work. See pics below:

Hard to tell from those pictures but where is it leaking? Through that big gap in the side?

It looks like you may have cut the hatch notch too deep or the hatch is too thin. If that grey strip in the second picture is the weatherstripping on the hatch then you have a huge gap to close.

I'm not sure how you are going to fix that other than beef up that part of the hatch.

Also I would have made the long part (the piece sticking out) the fixed piece, not the hinge hatch piece. Water could potentially follow the seam back and leak that way also.

I know our hatches are different but this is how mine looks. The gap is sealed with weatherstripping.

Thanks for the close up pics looks like I left the wrong side of the hinge longer. That sucks.... Looks like I'll have to order another hinge. I siliconed it up today and added some gasket so we will see what happens.

Shoprat!

Send me your e-mail to [email protected] (I can't tell who you are, here, without knowing at least your name) and I'll be happy to send you the series of pics that show how I recommend trimming the hinge pieces!

I'd talk to Grant first but you can trim that longer piece without buying a whole new hinge.

Thanks for posting this. I will be at this stage of my build soon. It is just as useful seeing how NOT to do it, as it is how to do it.

Glad it helps you out. I did some research on it before I made my plans but I wasn't able to find very good photos and I'm very visual.
