I just had an idea: the one thing I can get here in CA even at the box stores is redwood. Any objections to using redwood for the stick frame? I know it cost more but it is lighter than pine, weather resistant, and looks awesome.

You can do a fine job. I would suggest you look into a pocket hole jig like the Kreg one. This will make for a very ridged frame.

It's to bad you have to leave the state to build the trailer you want.

I just ordered one. I like the idea of foam, however I am not at all disappointed that I will be using wood. I am far more experienced with woodworking then I am with foam. Thanks for all the helpful advise!

If you are considering buying a Kreg pocket hole kit Harbor Freight has a considerably less expensive kit made from aluminum. It gets good reviews at LumberJocks.
