How Do You Get the Paint Off A New Hatch Hinge?

PostPosted: Sun Dec 11, 2005 9:45 am

Received my new hatch hinge via UPS yesterday and was surprised to find it painted black. I could install it and go on but prefer plain aluminum.
I wonder if anyone else has corrected a factory "mistake" such as this?
Paint remover, lye, elbow grease etc.? Thanks

John....you may have to live with that one, or start sanding....mine is black also and just tested a piece of it....used stripper, and acetone...it's powder coated....they didn't touch it...Doug

Paint it whatever color you want.... My bumper is painted silver and is good enough for me, but I'm a 90%'er... not a 100%'er.... makes my life easier.....

Function over form....

John6012, I have used a sandblaster to remove powder coat. If you go that way I would get glass beads or walnut shells. It will be slower but they will not mark the aluminum as much as sand. If you use sand use as small of grain as you can find. IMHO Dan

I vote for the "Nut Blaster" We used walnut shells for the aluminum stuff and glass beads for steel.

I did a quick look at http://www.eastwood.com/jump.jsp?itemID=1313&itemType=CATEGORY&path=1%2C2%2C1310&KickerID=243&KICKERIt lists the type of blasting media that they sell and what they recommend.
Maybe Madjack can recommend the proper high explosive.

..not sure this actually constitutes a personal problem as yet...we will see how things play out before making a recommendation as to the proper explosive :D  ;)

John,
Where did you get the black one?
Is it the new style or older style?

Eastwood sells stripper that will work on powder caoating also. Here is the link http://www.eastwood.com/shopping/produc ... t+stripper
I have used this and it does work. If the part is anodized we used to use oven cleaner to get that off.

Have a good day
Mark

An oil storage facility is on fire just north of London (England) - supposedly the biggest fire in Europe since WW2. The inital explosion was heard in Holland!!

Andrew

PS Crushed Walnut shells are used to clean the gas turbines on warships - there is nothing odder than seeing a guy shovelling the shells into the turbine air intake out of a sack.
