What tools would be good for me to get for a teardrop build?

Postby lacofdfireman » Fri Mar 18, 2016 11:38 am

Looking to build a teardrop style trailer. Build will be a 5x10 So one of the fun parts for me is buying the proper tools. I'm talking wood tools here. I think I'm good on the Metal stuff. Here is a list of what I already have which isn't much.

Small Bandsaw
Dewalt 10" chop saw
Worm drive skilsaw
Random orbital sander

What other tools would be worth the purchase. Sizes and brands appreciated.

I found a cheap pin nailer was good for holding the ceiling, roof and hatch cover on the ribs until the glue set. Larger spring clamps. Drill, driver with an adjustable clutch. I have a little hand chamfer tool that was nice for the deck screws I used. Looong tie downs for bending the roof. A pop-up canopy to build under then camp with. :-)

Get a Kreg Jig. I found it invaluable, especially for cabinet work. You only need the basic kit with single jig, drill bit, and collar. You can use any C-clamp but the locking adjustable welder's clamp is real convenient for holding the jig in place while drilling.

A cheap, desktop style drill press, like this from HF

I have my big old 1950s Craftsman, but I use the cheap tabletop model far more. Use the 20% off coupon and get it for about $49
and a multi-tool. This is like the handiest thing I have

Probably the most useful tool ive got in the last few years is an 18v impact driver.
Beats a drill hands down for driving screws and its lighter and far better on batteries.
Trim router and belt sander i found invaluable on my build.
Ive got good gear because i use it at work aswell but these days some perfectly good tools can be had for a song and will last many years with moderate use

Router, jig saw, drill, random orbital sander, and a 1/4" pneumatic crown stapler. Oh yeah, a couple of clamps. Ditto on the Kreg jig.

And no, they don't have to be yellow.

A credit card with a reasonably high limit can be very useful. :)

I agree with dguf; however, router, dreml, circlar saw, table saw, lots of clamps (assorted sizes shapes), chutzpah, kreg set, drill, sticktoitivness, and an understanding wife (not that she is a tool).

Lots of clamps of all types, and lots of patients.

Racketed tie straps to pull the roof down! Makes the roof curve easy.

I do have lots of Rachet straps and tie downs. I've always owned motorcycles so tie downs etc are a must. I think some of the things I need are

Router
Table saw
May look into a biscuit joiner as I'm planning to make my trailer a 5x10 profile. So I'll need to join the sheets to make them bigger. Don't really want to just butt joint them.

I have just about every Milwaukee M12 and M18 woodworking tool they make. I bought the little 18v blower and gosh darn that thing is useful. After you sweep up the big stuff I blow the shop down and it looks like the cleaning lady hit the garage.
