Wiley (ish) Window build

Postby rodtermaat » Tue Jul 05, 2016 10:09 pm

I was rather perplexed building a wiley window. I reviewed all of the posted and watched the videos, but must admit to some general confusion. Determined, I decided this weekend I would build said window for better or worse. I plan to build 2 in the lower half of the truck camper. The first is pictured in this little sad tutorial. The second will be in the lower door which should give me some rear view mirror usage?

First I cut out the plywood and glued up some 1X2s to frame out the window. Sounds good until I read the window should really overlap the upper frame by a couple of inches. Much to my dismay I was able to break off the 1X2 with minimal damage to the plywood.

Next I decided the 1/4 inch plywood would not be strong enough to seal the window against the wedges so I glued up some additional 1/2 boards around the frame.

Once that was done I knew I needed to make an angled window seal. I used 1/2 wood for this and hand planed a 25 is degree angle.

Of course this was a total failure as I did not account for the 1X2 framing. dumb arse I am.

Find the angle of the seal to fit the better wedges correctly.

Here are the wedges with the angles cut to sit against the seal.

Now you can see that simply will not do. I neglected to add a strip at the edge of the seal to block water from just pouring into the camper. Another genius move...

Here a bad pic of the fix.

So were does that leave me. I need to seal up any of my less than perfect angle cuts with some silicon. Make the wedges, and bob's your uncle. For experienced Wiley window builders hopefully these are not hideous and for Wiley want a be's hopefully this will shed some light on the process and what not to do....

More later this week as I finish off window number 1. I am thinking of adding some type of flashing around the plywood and maybe some rubber weather seal, but we will see what I can dig up at home depot.

Looks like the normal 'design as you go' process to me. The end result is looking just fine.

Does the window pane fit, go in and out, and tilt okay? Those are the big design requirements, so if you tick all of those boxes... success!
