skinned alumoinum trailer body

Postby quack24 » Wed Jul 20, 2016 12:45 pm

hi just looking for some criticism on my trailer plan its gong to be built on a 4 x8 harbor freight heavy duty trailer the floor will be 5 x 10 3/4 inch ply wood bolted down to the trailer the frame of the body will be 3/4 inch x 1/8 square aluminum tubing riveted to a 1 inch channel that will be bolted to the ply wood floor so basically you have the trailer with the plywood bolted on top the channel bolted around the edges and the square tubing ribs riveted to that the ribs will be 57 inches long with a 15 inch radius bent on top making the total height of the trailer 6 feet on the top of the ribs the will be attached to either an aluminum angle or channel frame giving me a 30 by 90 inch opening on top that will be covered with a removable roof the ribs will be spaced about 15 to 20 inches apart and will have 1 inch strapping running horizontally every 15 inches all this so far will be riveted with countersunk rivets on top of this frame will go aluminum sheet riveted to the horizontal strapping any reason this wont work too tall? to heavy? not structurally strong enough ? looking forward to hear what you guys think of this method and design

Use the search box at the top of the page and look for tinstream.

That should provide inspiration.

Do you plan on insulating? As you probably already know, aluminum conducts heat really well, so when it is hot out you will feel it inside, and when it is cold out it will feel cold to the touch.

How will you handle the difference between the tubing and face of flat bars/channel toes?

For ideas on insulating and sealing up a tube frame TD look for alaska teardrop's Northern Light build.

Here's another Airstream-style build that has detailed construction pictures: http://www.tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?f=50&t=54344. This was sized to be towed behind a motorcycle but is a fantastic example of what can be done.
