Aluminum TTT - Fitting/Mounting Door and Crank Out Windows

Postby ssuuki19 » Wed Sep 14, 2016 1:52 pm

While I am working on my build thread, hoping to get some feedback on what I'm working on today - fitting the door and windows. (NOT riveting them yet)

-to fit snug or not to fit snug? any advantages to making the fit larger than the frames?
-can I continue to seal with sikka-seal, or is this vhb tape way better? or both?

I have these nice drip ledges (aluminum, curves at both ends) I got from Lil' Bear store, but forgot to order one for the door - I'm hoping to find another one to complete the look. Can you still get these somewhere?

I'm going to research this forum for mounting information - specifically looking for experience on what NOT to do.

How does sealant get on my triceps and then my car seat?? more than once??
Aluminum is almost as fascinating as wood.

Well I guess the pictures are being looked at.. but no responses. I like this trim loc product.. looks pretty neat too. In my situation none of the windows have trim rings for the interior, as the interior will be done later on. The planning is to lay down some kind of gasket/tape/sealant and then riveting through the skin to the 1" tubes where there is frame and for some edges rivets will only be attached to the 16 gauge aluminum skin.
I've got all the windows fitted now with some grinding, cutting and test fits. Now, ones a bit tight, but its still fits in quite 'flat'. Back to research. Youtube has shown a multitude of ways to install doors and windows, they are probably all pretty good.. looking for the simplest solution.

Edit: the windows are exactly the same as the ones in http://tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=51598. Planning on tinting them too.

Keep up the good work and people will notice!

I'm watching and am sure others are, too. My guess is that since you are building with materials and techniques that are a little less common than a wood constructed TD, there are fewer "experts" available to offer suggestions and support. Your build is closer to a cargo trailer conversion in construction; perhaps there is useful info in that forum?

Also, don't be afraid to share your background, design thoughts, planned usage, pictures of your pet wandering into the scene, etc. Despite being a technical forum, a big part of the fun is the social interaction and camaraderie we all get from doing this thing we do. (After writing that I found your newbie thread, but had to go to your profile to see your most active thread.)

One more thing, I don't see a link to your build thread (or newbie thread). Try putting a link into your signature line. That, along with having your region in your avatar, will help people who may not be familiar with your other posts "connect the dots" and give more useful suggestions.

Good luck, and build on!

^yup, i would love to help but i have no clue. Youtube videos that you were looking at that are specific to exactly what your doing sound like the best bet.
Now you have me wondering how rivets keep out water :p

Just wanted to post an update - its a lot of rain here these days, lets say she's being leak tested. With no side door, no 3 windows, and no cargo door, the shell is just 'sitting in the rain all day' ready to start moulding/mossing.. that will happen if you don't clean it out... I should have sealed it weeks ago, oh well, no biggie. I am just going to continue all this on my build thread.
