any suggestions on mounting fenders to the finished sidewalls,,,I bought the half round flat top units,,do yall think a stiff piece of strap steel bolted to the rear of the fender and then bolted into or thru bolted into the wall would be strong enough??I am not gonna be standing on them just keeping the major trash off,,heck they just for looks,,,,,need some thoughts,,

All I can say is make shure you got em where you want them. I know someone that built theres and bolted them on and had to change it later and it is pretty tricky to hide and fill in those holes.

Chip,
Most folks bolt the fenders to the sides. You can use threaded inserts, a wood threaded outside/machine threaded inside. This is what I did, got them from a woodworker's catalogue, don't remember which. I saw these at Lowes in the specialty fastener drawers.
I had a problem centering the fender over the tires. I bought 13" by 4" tires with the trailer parts kit. I upgraded to 15" by 6" wheels and tires. I used treaded rod couplings to stand the fenders off the needed distance. All fasteners are stainless steel. The photo only shows three of the five points of attachment. I wouldn't stand on them...why? But, they aren't going anywhere!

My H.F. trailer came with a heavy duty L shaped bracket. I can't seem to find it at the moment. But it would seem that you could bend over the edges of the bracket a little bit to match the profile of your fender, put in a couple pop-rivets, and then bolt the bracket to your frame.

I guess that bracket was designed to stand on.

So what did I do on my HF trailer... I did what Steve did in that last message...

Mike...

Steve and Mike thanks,,nice mount Steve,,,I saw some inserts that you predrill and push into the wood from the inside then insert bolt from outside and tighten,,I was gonna cut or make a spacer to off set the fenders out about a half inch or so,, the insert has barbs to keep it from spinning once it has been installed into the wood,,looks like ya got to tap it in with a hammer to set the barbs,,I think it was in the speciality fasteners box at Lowe's also,,
I would hate for these things to come bouncing off while I was flying down the highway,,oh well back to sLowe's

Ask for tee-nuts. Should be avaiable in several sizes.
They will work only if you don't have interior finish yet, or don't mind seeing them in side. Threaded inserts will not show inside, but the wall has to be 1/2" thick for the insert to hold to.

I used carriage bolts, from the inside, with lock washers and nuts inside the fender well. I coated the whole mess with a can of asphalt undercoating. It worked well, but I've got no gap between the fender and the body.

I put off replacing our steel fenders with a set of teardrop fiberglass ones, for two summers now! Been worried about mounting them to the cabin. Have someone lined up now to remove the current ones and build a mount that the fenders will bolt too, floating away from the sides of the cabins for an inch or two (needed partially to clear the tire). Not being done until next spring... I think

Chip,

I seem to recall seeing an installation on one of the web pages that showed a couple of steel straps welded to the inside flange of the fender and extending down to the axle behind the hub. The assembly was either welded to the axle or bolted to the unused brake mount. This way you can run the minimum tire clearance and the fender can ride up and down with the suspension. It looks slick and there are no holes or fasteners in the body.

Worth a try?

now ya tell me,,lol,,,I wound up using bolts and mounted tthe fenders to the body,,I used nylon spacers to set the fender out from the body just a hair..its not strong enough to stand on but it works fine to shed the water and dust,,also a nifty place to hang mud flaps,,

thanks for the input
