So you could put your lights between the spars, then install the ceiling and have it light up the inside, with nothing to bump your head on? LEDs so you would not have to change bulbs.

Hey Miriam,

It is sold by Farmtek, the link is in the first post of this thread. Here are the prices. If you get thicker than the 1/16th it gets rather expensive, and if you are building a 5 footer, only the 1/16th comes that wide and in a 10 foot length. They ship UPS, and my last order of 4 sheets was around $85.00 and over $30.00 to ship.

PolyMax Board 1/16" x 4' x 8' $18.95 /EA
PolyMax Board 1/16" x 5' x 10' $27.95 /EA
PolyMax Board 1/10" x 47 1/2" x 95 3/4" $29.95 /EA
PolyMax Board 1/8" x 40" x 124" $39.45 /EA
PolyMax Board 1/8" x 47 1/2" x 95 3/4" $36.95 /EA
PolyMax Board 5/32" x 47 1/2" x 95 3/4" $45.95 /EA
PolyMax Board 3/16" x 23 3/4" x 95 3/4" $26.95 /EA
PolyMax Board 3/16" x 47 1/2" x 95 3/4" $52.95 /EA
PolyMax Board 3/16" x 72" x 96" $79.95 /EA
PolyMax Board 1/4" x 32" x 96" $48.95 /EA
PolyMax Board 1/4" x 47 1/2" x 95 3/4" $69.95 /EA
PolyMax Board 3/8" x 48" x 96" $99.95 /EA
PolyMax Board 1/2" x 48" x 96" $139.95 /EA

gman,

It is not that translucent. The lady I talked to at Farmtek had told me light would not shine through it, so I was expecting it to be non-translucent. You can see from the pics that's not the case. But it is not translucent enough to put lights behind.

It is literally indistructable, and even if there is an adhesive that may semi-adhere, it may not lay flat or tend to bubble or shrink depending on the temp.

Just a comment that would be worth investigating prior to using it on a large surface like the roof.

I was wondering the same thing. I know many plastics do expand and contract with temperature changes. I looked up the "Coefficient of linear thermal expansion" of polyethylene and it is quite high. I would expect that if it is firmly attached with screws it might buckle in the heat. Maybe someone could experiment with a sheet by clamping the edges when it's cold then setting it out in the sun to see what happens.

Here's a reference chart http://www.dotmar.com.au/solutions/ther ... ansion.htm

Maybe this has been covered ages ago, but what about contact cement? Is it too brittle? I know it is waterproof when dry and have even seen where canvas was waterproofed with it to make a folding kayak.

Chief, welcome to the board...Polymax is know as "hi density polyethelene board" and after several emails with several adhesive manufacturers, it has been found that almost nothing will stick toit and that mechanical fastening is required, so Sid and others have been working on a way to float it and seal at the edge with some sort of trim and rubberized adhesives...we all await the results with great anticipation..

Sid, yours is looking nice. I PM,ed you just a few minuted ago before I had a chance to see your pics. Hey looking Guuuuuud :D :D I just want to add this. I too considered the sealing washers, even ordered some. However I beleive, from my little testing efforts, that they will not be needed as the Henrys 663 or the contact cement will hold quite sufficently. I also agree on the use of caulking, IE silicone or Marine Goop, will provide a good and durable seal on the seams when also covered by the aluminum angle. Keep me posted on your progress. We may be on to something big here....

Oh, by the way all, since you "love da pics" I guess I ought to show some of my humble progress. If anyone cares to have a look here are my photos to date. Have not posted the photo with the insulation in place, which is where I am now. Gettin ready to skin this little "Redneck Roadhouse". The pics are here. Do an ascending sort on time and they will be in the correct chronological (did I spell that right) order :D :D

Sorry MJ, no pics yet, but I skinned the inside of the galley with Polymax yesterday and used the 3M double sided/doublestick tape. You better get it where you want it the first shot, because it ain't coming back off without one helluva fight. I set the first piece a little crooked and well, it's still a little crooked. It was instant bond. It works great, you just have to be sure it's where you want it on the first shot. The edges trim off very nice with a utility knife. I think this is a great alternative for aluminum, especially for folks who have a hard time locating aluminum. It is also much cheaper and can be delivered by UPS. And it comes in a 5 x 10 sheet for you large builders. Farmtek also carries an industrial strength double faced plastic tape (part # LJ7587) for $5.95 per 25 yard roll.

As stated before though, it is not a pristine material. It comes complete with scrathes.

Ron, I'm curious to see how the Henry's 663 works. Let me know. I bought some at HD yesterday, but thought I'd try the tape first. I'm not sure how long the carpet adhesive will stay plyable over the years. With the tape, I don't think it will ever harden.

So far, Polymax is :ok:
