Any reason not to use boat windows?

Postby sarahem » Mon Aug 26, 2019 2:21 pm

I am trying to keep the build as cheap and simple as possible. I was looking up camper windows and actually found a lot of boat windows that are the right size and price. Any reason not to use them? :)

As long as they open and are screened.

I had considered the same, but can't find anything suitable locally.

Keep in mind that a lot of boat windows / port lights have thicker glass than most RV / camper applications. So they generally weigh a bit more. The difference wouldn't be noticed in most builds. But if you were building an ultra-light with big windows, it might be something worth paying attention to.

Amazon actually has a few options that would work for me! Around $30. The weight is something we are minding but I think two very small windows will be OK!

Make sure it is a slider or if an awning, opens out. Boat windows open in, I think.

You might want to investigate marine deck plates.

8 inch is about the largest I've seen, so it might be a sacrifice to use them.
I have in mind using a black one inside, and a white with clear center outside, with a piece of screen sandwiched between. In that way, I can remove the centers of both for passive venting, keeping the bugs out. I can also keep the clear outside in place, making it a window, and with the black center on the inside, I can sleep in, in total darkness if I want to.

Just a thought.....Roger
