Joining wall to floor

Postby waterguy1111 » Mon Sep 28, 2020 4:57 am

Looking for suggestions. I’m getting ready to butt joint my 3/4 inch plywood walls to my floor which is 3/4 inch plywood on top of 1x4 subfloor. Is my best bet to use my KREG pocket system or just go straight into the 3/4 inch plywood? I’m thinking the KREG way might be a little bit stronger.

Thoughts?

Pocket screws, glue, and if you want to extra sure it wont move, the below with glue and screws holding it.

Rabbet joint, screws (from both directions, bottom & sides) & glue! It will never come apart. A simple 1/4" X 3/4" rabbet joint is as strong as it gets.

The time you spend planning is more important than the time you spend building.........

Can you trim your floor down 1.5" and attach the walls to the sides of the floor?

That way you could screw (and glue) from the sides and with pocket screws from the inside. (And cover the plywod edges of the floor.)

I build with sandwiched walls and leave an outside skin that covers the floor. I set the wall on the floor (with PL Premium glue applied) and then screw from the outside and then pocket screws from the inside.

For yours, you could install temporary blocking on the inside of the wall to sit on the floor while you screw from the outside.

Now the weakness of this concept is that you'll have a lot of weight sitting on this joint. I like Tim's (aka NoseOil) rabbet idea. The other thought is to install several 3/8" dowels horizontally after the walls are installed. That would be easy enough.

 A thought.

All wonderful ideas. I do have sufficient space next to my floor that I left to place my plywood walls up against. I like the idea of Kreg screws and doing the 3/8 dowel rods. and of course sufficient glue!

You guys are the Best! My floor is too far "in" to do the rabbet joint, unfortunately. I will send Pictures as I go!

Thank You Again!!!

Just in case you haven't seen it yet, there was a long thread about floor/wall attachment...
