Home built fenders

Anything to do with mechanical, construction etc

Doug, with a marine grade ply like 4-6mil, you could get it to bend around a jig for the profile...and make a flat outer surface...or you could play with matching up curves and have the outer edge on the aft end curve in towards the body...ease the hard edge where the 2 sides meet with a router, or if you backed it up with thicker material, a belt sander...they can be done...just depends on how much time and effort you want to put into them...just an idea Doug

I'm going to make my own fenders of plywood (3/4" side frames, skinned with 1/4"). These type may not work for you, but may give you some ideas. In the pic below, the left design, without the wheel cutout area will be my pattern (it matches the shape of my TTT). You can see it better on my web site.

To get at the wheel, the fender will be hung with taper connectors I got from Rockler, to be lifted off when needed. Not shown in the diagram is the pieces that will be turned under the frame to "lock" it in place.

Dale,
That's an interesting mounting system.
Got any pics of those Rockler tapered mounts?

Yep...I have my mounting brackets since last week. They are strong looking Rockler has a tech document on how to mount them, dadoing one piece in so that the clearance is barely noticable. I'll take a picture of them after lunch and post it here.

Mike,

Here is a photo. One connector has the two pieces together, the other separated and both pieces reversed (turned over) from the position of the closed one. These are the 6" connectors.

Here is a suggestion:

Over on Discovery Channel is "Monster Garage", and from time-to-time, Jesse James can be seen using a power hammer shaping a fender or body part or something....

Maybe if you were to go to a Hotrod shop or Chopper shop and explain what you want????

That would be totally custom one-off. I'll bet that it would be really expensive. Consider the amount of fabrication time involved with one gas tank. On American Chopper they build the whole bike in the same amount of time it takes Rick to do just the tank.

You would be better off trying to modify an existing part.

Dale, how many connectors do you need for each fender. Two?

If I go the plywood route, and I want to make them removeable like yours so I can make them hang low on the wheel line and LOOK really cool, yet easily remove them in the event of a flat...

How do you line up those connectors on fender and wall so it's not a major project?

I need the answer for dummies, please.
Here we go again!
