Clear coat over Epoxy

Postby western traveler » Wed Jun 02, 2021 2:55 pm

I am striving for a natural finish...

Here is the situation and questions. While fiberglassing my first wall yesterday, I went too heavy with my first fill coat. It will need sanding and another coat of epoxy.

I did the second wall today learning from yesterday’s mistakes.

Today’s wall has a bit of air bubbles in it but it is pretty close. I will do a light third coat.
We have a long thermometer here right now and I have tried to control the garage environment with the wood and epoxy temps but I think it is off gassing.
Can I lightly sand the panels when done and apply varnish to get the shine back? I know I need the UV protection and I want a glossy finish...

Tony,
Thanks for the response. I didn’t want to compound the issue.
I doubt I can get the finish as smooth as I want without the last coat of epoxy being sanded out...

Epoxy isn’t UV stable so you’re going to want several coats of good spar varnish anyway.

YES!

that is actually the standard procedure w/ pox

once you have all your cloth weave filled enuff to sand back for a smooth surface it is then time to apply several coats of good SPAR VARNISH to protect the pox frum UV as mentioned above
