My 72" bar clamps arrived today......... :D and there's an oily film on them. What can I use to remove this film; since there is lots of oil on them, and I don't want the oil to run onto the wood I'm clamping up.

Ken,

If you have it, mineral spirits (paint thinner) will do a fine job of removing it. Not very expensive at all and available at most any do-it-yourself center or hardware store.

Lacquer thinner - cheap and will strip about anything

Ken,

All of the above will work.

My favorite is mineral spirits since it is slow to evaporate, then a quick wipedown with acetone or lacquer thinner to get the residue off.

No matter what you use to degrease, it it always wise to protect the metal with something, be it paint, oil, or wax.
