Aluminum Roof Coat ?

Postby nater104 » Thu Sep 09, 2004 9:12 am

I know absolutley nothing about this stuff... but could you make a
plywood frame, use filler for the cracks and edges, seal it and then paint the whole thing with Aluminum Roof Coating? Like this stuff:

Again, I know nothing about this stuff, so this could be a dumb question

I thought about trying that, but didn't think I could get it to look very good. Take a look at a mobile home roof and you'll see what I mean....

Hi Nater...

I've never experimented with this silver roof coating. It would probably work, but it might not be the prettiest texture... it probably won't be smooth. I don't know how good it repels dirt either. It's cheap, but if you have $1000 into a teardrop, wouldn't it make more sense to put just a little bit more into the covering to make it look good?

Nater,, welcome to the group,,,I work in the roofing industry and the product you are considering will, over a short period of time form small cracks,,,even though it is a coating and is fibered, it is intended to be used to protect asphalt and reflect light,,it typically is not used for the waterproof coating,,,its also hard to get a smooth surface with it,,,Just my opinion but there are a lot of inexpensive alternatives out there that you would be more satisfied with,,but ya thinking and thats good,,ask away with the questions,,and again welcome

Thanks, I figured it might not work too good, I just thought I'd see if anyone had experience with the stuff. I just saw it at the store and thought I'd look into it. Thanks for the replies.

Chip,

What do you think about using something like Kool Seal? And if you would use it would you prime the wood or just apple the KS? If you would prime first, with what would you prime your wood? :)

Thanks,

Eagle

Yeah, Kool seal was right next to the aluminum roof coat, but I figured it would be the same story.... lets see what the guys that know say.

Guys,,sorry but the same will hold true for kool seal,,both products are good in a limited area of application,,I am not saying they would not work for a while but the finish you would get is gonna be rough,,If you were looking for something real inexpensive then I would go with a premium grade exterior primer and paint,,or go up to an upgrade to a coating that is two part epox like Mike used on the Baja Benroy,,

One other point is that both would be a bear to take off if and when you wanted to put some other coating on

Cheap roof coatings

Postby mikeschn » Fri Sep 10, 2004 9:59 am

My guess is if you use one of those cheap roof coatings, it'll end up looking something like this...
