Bob trailer converted into bicycle teardrop?

Postby Agape » Tue Jan 30, 2007 12:45 pm

Hello everyone,
Touring cyclist here, getting ready for a cross country. Decided to do something different this time and ride this trip for the ADA on a 1975 vintage Raleigh Sports
http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/page/?o=lt&page_id=46896&v=e

No way to carry all of our gear ( I travel with two jack russell terriers, Airwick and Agape) http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/page/?o=lt&page_id=16196&v=1i9 so I am looking into buying a bob bicycle trailer http://www.bobtrailers.com/trailers/trailer.php?product_id=10 and I'd like to turn it into a Airstream looking teardrop. (just attach the teardrop to the bob frame and off we go)

My kitchen is a http://www.jetboil.com/ Group Cooking System and my bed the typical tent.

I need it to be as lightweight as possible but would love a teardrop beauty.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

The trailer would be great for your dogs (and stuff, too!).

It looks like the doggies could use a pad or blanket in their crate on the back of your bike until you get the trailer all decked out for them. It would provide a less slippery surface and a bit of padding for their little paws. How do they hang on if you have to make a sudden turn or stop?
They sure are cute!

Agape,

I've got a Bob trailer (and Jack Russels!), and it pulls nice once you get used to it, but may be hard to modify to look like a teardrop. Might be easier to build one from scratch. The sides of the Bob give it strength, but because they are curved, may be hard to adapt to a teardrop look. Might be easier to make an all aluminum frame/unibody trailer. Did you plan to have openings for the dogs to look out, or just use the trailer for carrying your gear?

It's nice to see you riding vintage bikes  too many people out there are all caught up in carbon fiber and such. I have several older (70's - 80's) bikes that I ride, including a couple of old Nishikis, and an early Gary Fisher mountain bike.

Agape,
My grandson is starting a bicycle sleeper that is going to look great and provide him a place to carry his junk, It is modeled after MadJacks partners motocycle camper. You could modify it to look like a teardrop of sorts.

Hi Everyone!
Thanks for the great advice and replies. I am on the road right now so I will have to respond more later when we get the chance. The teardrop is progressing nicely and will be (hopefully) custom built.

I am including the sketch of the original prototype.

Great Group!

Hank and Airwick

Plans call for it to be made out of a copper colored aluminum to look like a vintage Airstream.

Love your photos and suggestions however.......

Well, let me know how you think it turned out. :D

I've got to "Airstream" up the outside but I am especially proud of the separate bed and kitchen sections. Please notice the additional rack where the pet seat will attach.

It works as a url. To get pictures to show here you need to load on your album or they need to be on the internet as opposed to an album type thingy.

Beautiful Teardrop, I hope the puppy will enjoy it.

Thanks JunkMan!
You gave me applause, so sure. :) I'll get that to you, asap.

I am in no way done. Time now to spruce up the Airwick Airsteam with extras and make it look like a vintage trailer. I am looking over T&TTT for ideas for just the right look.

Suggestions appreciated. 8)

I think Mad One decided it wasn't used and was taking up space. :(

It was Mikes decision ... think it was replaced by the Cargo trailer conversion forum thread. :)
