Bicycle Teardrop

Teardrop shaped bicycle travel trailers & related information

Postby angib » Tue Oct 03, 2006 6:15 am

There are quite few web sites sshowing people's home-made trailers, such as:
http://www.re-cycle.org/trailer/
http://www.carryfreedom.com/bamboo.html
http://drumbent.com/trailer.html
http://www.instructables.com/id/EUHUN7QXLIEP2860MD/

There is at least one commercial trailer manufacturer who sells their hitch on its own, but I can't locate them - too much junk saved!

Miriam,

There's a neat little lightweight one here: http://www.tonystrailers.com/mobileshelter/
but it is a tent trailer, not a hardside.

Thanks Greg. Sean thinks that is cool too but he has a tent and a box with wheels now. He and his friends have been unguided guessing at this for some time.

He cut out his cardboard mock up of the "Bed Roll" today. A shorter model due to a lack of long cardboard. He thinks his friends will really get a kick out of it. Should keep him outta trouble for a couple of months.

Auntie M, I have sitting on a tractor bushhogging that last two days and haven't gotten over to the shop for additional pics...I will get over there tomorrow and take some interior shots of the BedRoll...been thinking about it and if he can scrounge up a couple of bicycle wheels, he could probably use conduit for a frame and 1/4 ply with minimal framing for floor/side...the BedRoll has an AL over ribs top with no underlayment.....

emailed me these two pictures of a bike trailer with a bed on it. Sounds pretty light to me...

Hi guy's,
I have been planning on building a bike trailer tent for a few months now.
Iv'e scoured the net for over 8 months looking at trailer designs - there aint many trailers I haven't seen :)

My idea was to have a plywood box shape trailer with a removable lid. 4 tent poles would then be set into each corner of the trailer, then the lid/roof would be replaced. Some kind of tarpaulin/tent material would then be unfurled from inside the roof down the sides of the trailer. An additional canopy-tented attached area would house my bike at night and also serve as a cooking area. The end result would look similar to a 4 poster bed?

The thing with building a bicycle trailer tent is keeping the WEIGHT down. You have to remember you'll be towing not just the trailer but all your camping gear - extra clothes - cooker - food - fishing gear/rods - sleeping bag/mat etc etc The list goes on

I have built a few proto type trailers each a little better than the last. The troubles I ran into were use of poor materials? Wood - weak Angle Iron.

About a month ago a sourced out some box tubing - (this also maybe to heavy?) and got a mate to weld up a basic frame. I still have to source out a couple of cross beams but here's how its looking so far...

Something like this but for a bicycle would be good...

Here's a recumbant towing camper/trailer ;)

As already mentioned weight is the problem with bike trailers, I may end up having to go along the lines of something like this?

Has there been any more developements by anyone on this OLD thread?

Regards
Tom
