Quoting a post in Chrome loses smilies

Postby capnTelescope » Sun Aug 17, 2014 12:33 pm

Somewhere in the middle of my build journal, I switched from Firefox to Chrome. Since then, I've noticed that when I quote part of a post, I lose the smilies. :(

Is this a quirk of Chrome, or do I need to change a setting?

I'll burn that bridge when I come to it.

OTOH, if I quote the whole post, everything's OK:

Well...... let's see what happens. I'm using Chrome on a Mac :) I just used a copy/paste to get your quote and smiley in.

Strange, I don't get that result when I do just a part of a quote. But who am I, I don't know anything? :o

When you only do part of a quote, take your time and be sure you don't remove the coding for the smiley. Also check and be sure that you haven't checked the box to DISABLE SMILIES. :o

Just pay attention to the text as you quote it and not accidentally delete the emoticon if you only intend to quote part of the post. The coding used to quote posts is built into the forum software and doesn't have anything to do with browser selection.

Brad,

I just looked at your settings, and you do not have smilies turned off.

So I can only guess that when you did a partial quote you might have deleted the text that makes up the smilie...

for example a colon : and a parenthesis ) without a space in between makes a :)

Mike, you can override that setting simply by checking the box that is provided below the main box that you enter you text listed under options.

It only affects that reply as noted here. I didn't check the box as I did in the last post. :o ...... ;)

That's correct Gage. I checked each of Brad's posts as well!

But if you look at the text of Brad's post, there is no colon, and no parenthesis. Which leads me to believe he edited them out.

I don't remove the coding, it didn't get put there in the first place. :(
I don't ever check disable smilies. In fact, I just had to really look carefully to find where. I like smilies. :)

absolutsnwbrdr wrote:Just pay attention to the text as you quote it and not accidentally delete the emoticon if you only intend to quote part of the post.

I've been paying extra attention, since this problem surfaced, to make sure I select the smilie before I quote. I'm selecting them. honest I am. :(

absolutsnwbrdr wrote:The coding used to quote posts is built into the forum software and doesn't have anything to do with browser selection.

That would seem to be correct, except in my case, apparently. :(

mikeschn wrote:So I can only guess that when you did a partial quote you might have deleted the text that makes up the smilie...

If the smiley code got deleted, I didn't do it

mikeschn wrote:But if you look at the text of Brad's post, there is no colon, and no parenthesis. Which leads me to believe he edited them out.

That would be a great practical joke to pull on y'all. But I didn't do it.

If I select text that contains a smiley, copy and paste it into my text editor, the smiley code comes through.
If I try to quote the same selection, (sniffle) no smiley.

BTW, that's kinda strange. If I view the source of the page by using the browser function, it's an image tag that renders the smiley. But I don't recall seeing the smiley code. Maybe Chrome doesn't handle that somehow.

I can work around the problem, but it's an annoyance.
I'll burn that bridge when I come to it.

I don't usually quote photos, so this is a test.
