Making long URL's shorter.

Postby Kevin A » Mon Dec 26, 2005 1:09 am

Ok, this is driving me nuts. Does anyone remember a thread about editing the length of URL's so they don't create an oversize window when embedded in a post? I'm certain the FAQ held the info I'm looking for, but I can't find it in there anywhere. HELP!!!!!!!

Or, use the URL function built into this forum software to display some brief but meaningful text instead of the 2-mile-long URL address.

To do this, copy the address you want to link to and then click on the 'URL' button. Paste the address, with a '=', after the first 'url' and before the square bracket, like this:

Click on the button now showing 'URL*' to put in the final '/url'.

The result looks like this:
TinyURL's web site

Yeah, yeah, I know I didn't need to shorten 'tinyurl.com'!

how I do it...click the "url" button, click "backspace"(once), click "=" now paste the url, click "]" now type your text, click "close tags".....what you get should look like this...
text

Thanks to Rocky, Andrew & Jack for the help  :applause:

So essentially the cursor is placed between then type = followed by the long url then type the shorter text after the second bracket followed up by closing the tags. I think I got it, thanks again guys. test

Can this info be added upstairs somewhere like "help with photos"?

Now there's a idea!!!

I have to keep doing them to remember how to do it. If I don't create one for a few days, I have to go back to the instructions I have in a notepad file on my desktop.

Andrew and Madjack,
Thanks for the info. That has been driving me crazy. I wasn't aware of the "=" sign.

Yup, you've got the technology bit sorted. Now all we need to do is teach you to put something more descriptive than 'test' in the link and you'll be a pro.......

Andrew

And I forgot to add - if you let your cursor hover over the URL button when you're posting a message, the correct format for the URL code appears just above the text box. If you look at the screen print above, you'll see it, starting with "Insert URL......"

You are welcome!

This is the kind of stuff that I see on other forums but never found out how to do. This is a friendly place so asking how to do things is not a biggie. On some forums I've been to, asking a question like that would encite a flame war.

I've learned a lot from this forum, not only teardrop construction but computer stuff.

I'll dust this one off ...

Here is an extra trick, it doesn't have to be text, it can be an image.

Instead of "text" replace with ""

Then you can have sometime like

You can also use Snip URL to make your URLs shorter. If you register with them you can also manage your links and see how many people have clicked on them.

Another free site is called notlong.com

It is very easy to use. Just enter the original name and then type a short rename. I have used this one for several (originally) long url's.

For some reason my computer will not display things from tinyurl.com. I am not sure why that is. Perhaps my antivirus/spyware program thinks it is spyware. But notlong.com url's display normally.

A Web was something a spider made...
A Window was something you closed before it rained....
A post was something you tied your horse to....
A group was a bunch of people
Paste was what you used to glue pictures to paper....

A board was a piece of wood...
