Interesting galley hatch. Not sure what to call it?

We call it a "clam shell" design for the rear hatch. We found it gave more clearance for the pantry needs. Thank you for looking

So what do you do with the bottom portion of the clam?

I believe the answer you are looking for is, it lifts up and latches into place. We use that area to store tarps, marshmellow sticks, or whatever we can think of. The drawers extend out far enough to reach past the hatch when it is in the down position. There is also a little hatch above the cooler to allow access without opening the bottom hatch.

Thank you Dave, I can say the same for yours. How many hours do you have in yours? Beautiful wood working.

My pardon for not asking a bit more succinctly, it looks like either it comes off when not up in position or gets stepped on or? My wife had the same question. It does look great :)

Actually it does not come off, though that is a great idea. We do not step on it, though that is another great idea. We just use the bottom hatch for extra storage. I will try to post more pics of the build to better show the design. It was a fluke on how the hatch system came about, we just figured, why not? So we gave it a try.

The hatch deploys low enough that it does not block or hinder the use of the pantry.

VERY cool! I started mine nearly 5 years ago though am just now finishing it. I thought I had an original design, but I can see great minds think alike! Here is a couple of mine! (although my "tailgate" IS removable) However there are many finishing touches that yet need to be done such as somehow finishing the bare wood, etc.
