So I read on some blog that the power was out in Eureka or nearby.

Was a lot of the area without power, or just a few buildings here and there?

Last one I remember in our area up here, was years ago. Enough to rock the bed a little and it actually felt good. Hardly a 4.

I know power was out in Eureka but do not have details. The power was out at my house in Fortuna for just a minute then came back on.
The papers are showing pictures of different stores with everything on the floors. these are probably on the internet somewhere
A beautiful old historic building in Old Town (Eureka) is going to be tore down. It is really a shame to lose this building. Part of the old Veterans building has been red tagged along with the old theater building. They are still finding building with structural problems.

This will put some perspective into your Northern Cali quake.

Haiti just got hit with a 7.0 quake, in a depararatley poor country, with old, poorly built structures.

"Minor earthquakes are common in the Caribbean, but there has not been a major one in Haiti in 16 years. The country of about 9 million people, most of them desperately poor, has struggled with political instability and has no real construction standards. In November 2008, following the collapse of a school in Petionville, the mayor of Port-au-Prince estimated about 60 percent of the buildings were shoddily built and unsafe in normal circumstances."

So, if all you have to do is clean up canned goods and replace broken glass -- count your blessings.

This Haiti quake is going to have a death toll.
