Things that don't fit anywhere else...

cookies

Postby Arne » Tue Mar 22, 2005 8:43 am

Almost every site I go to, including this one, wants to set cookies having nothing to do the the site. I understand needing a cookie for Mike's site with the password, but mediaplex and zedo also want to set cookies.

Can anyone explain how they even find out I'm coming to this site? Seems like a lot of intrusion going on.... does it make any difference if I let them set one?

I deleted all the cookies and am starting over with entering passwords, etc. to try and keep things 'neat'....

My site sets a cookie to keep track of how many visits you've made and then gives an appropriate message which is quite harmless.

You shouldn't have to delete all of your cookies to clean things up. Just run one of the free spyware programs like 'Ad-Aware' and it will find all of the tracking cookies plus other harmful programs and let you delete just them. These are the ones that slow your computer down to a crawl.

Denny, thank you for reminding me. I've been so tied up in investing software, I've neglected to do ad-awar and spybot for several weeks. Today is a good day to catch up on that....

Speaking of cookies...
A friend of mine recently informed me that she has her computer configured to ask if she wants to accept a cookie because she says that there are now cookies that don't expire until the year 2035.
She tells me that some of these cookies won't go away even if you dump them.
I've never heard of that before.
I usually clean out my temporary internet files, history and cookies on a regular basis because I've discovered that some sites install tracking devices on your computer and they will slow your computer down quite a bit while on the internet.

Anybody else heard of these undumpable long term cookies?

(I do have Adaware and as far as I know, I'm not seeing any of them)

No, we can eat just about any cookies we want and we still go to the bathroom just fine. I like the thinmints but my wife prefers the samoas.

Micosoft has a good anti addwear program that you can down load for
free. It works well and they will keep it up dated.

Arne those are probably third party cookies and you can set your internet options to not accept them. Click on "Tools" then "Internet Options" then "Privacy" tab. Your default setting is probably "Medium". You can click "Advanced" and check "Accept" under First Party Cookies and "Block" under Third Party Cookies. That should take care of the ones that aren't directly related to the site.

I use an ad blocker program too. That way I can choose which sites I want or don't want cookies from.

Hope this helps.

That is an oxymoron - a contradiction in terms. You know, like
    military intelligence
    Dodge Ram
    new and improved
    Microsoft Works

We've been testing the new Microsoft Antispyware at school and have found that it works better than a lot of the comercial products.

I use the perfect solution to adware, spyware, viruses, etc. My home computers all run Linux.

At work, I'm stuck with Win2k, but we are behind a firewall and use a proxy server.
