What do you put on your hot dogs?

Postby Bigwoods » Thu Oct 30, 2014 11:36 pm

My Grandkids were visiting and I was surprised they want nothing on there hot dogs. One brave soul did ask for a dot of catsup. They were shocked when I was covering mine with mustard and onions and kraut. Bet you guys use some interesting toppings. :o

"All the way", in my neck of the woods, means mustard, onions, slaw and chili. Just please don't steam the bun. Yuk!

No ketchup! Drag it through the garden with a little celery salt :). Can't help it, at heart, I'm a Chicago boy :)

Equal parts ketchup and yellow mustard. And the last one I ate had an odd assortment of wood debris, probably lichen, and some mildew on the inside of the dog itself because the stick it was cooked on was from an old wood pile and wasn't very clean. It was tasty though, and I'm still here so thankfully nothing too icky was in there.

If it's a really good dog it doesn't need all that red and yellow stuff. Doesn't need the bun either which is good as I need to avoid gluten and gluten free breads are not all that great mostly. But I love these dogs straight off the grill, even microwaved.

Agree with "all the way" above except use pickle relish instead of slaw. Our grandkids also go with just a dog and bun, maybe a little ketchup or mustard.

Brown mustard and relish here. But I much prefer bratwurst (WI style, not the white hot dogs) or mettwurst to hot dogs. When my kids were very young the babysitter's husband was a Federal inspector in a large hot dog plant in town. He never ate hot dogs.

Mustard, onions, kraut and jalapenos

or

hold the mustard and use Kimchi in the place of kraut and jalapenos

OR
what I like to call the 'Fire & Gas' combo, all of the above for quite an 'explosive' combination :frightened: :)

I make a hot pepper, jalapenos and other hot pepper relish. That will be on a hot dog for sure.

I like mine with EITHER

Sauerkraut and brown mustard

OR

Hormel chile.

No bun, either way. No, I'm not celiac or paleo, I just don't eat grain-y stuff as much any more.

Those familiar with Route 1 in southern Maine stop at Flo's for hot dogs with her special Flo's Sauce.

I'm torn between several choices: hot dogs charred from cooking over a campfire (held with sticks, not stainless utensils) were always great on buns, sans everything...boiled hot dogs have lost their flavor (unless boiled in beer, my old trick 40 years ago), so add as much as you can to flavor-em up (kraut/spicy brown mustard, chow-chow/yellow mustard, chopped onions/chili/cheese)...high dollar gourmet hot dogs require mini-baguettes and Grey Poupon, of course.
