Dash cams

Postby mustangcats » Thu Sep 17, 2015 7:07 pm

Is anyone here using a dash cam to record their trips? I bought one last year because I wanted to preserve what I saw as I drove, rather than having it all end up being just a memory. The clarity of the videos is very good except when driving into the sun. It's fun to go back and look at some of the videos and relive those great moments driving down the road into new territory. The price has really come down on the dash cams, so you might want to check them out.

I do not have one yet. But I want one. Your reason is one I really have not considered, but it is a good one. My thoughts were more for documenting traffic harasement or accident issues. And I agree, the options and prices are getting better. When I think of one, I think of a GoPro which has a variety of uses other then just on the dash.

I bought an SJ4000 and used it for our big trip this summer. It was fun to be able to use it for other videos like rafting and biking rather than just a dashcam.

They are inexpensive on Amazon.

Well that was just mean!

I really didn't need one of those in my wish list. That is, when I didn't know about it, I didn't need it. Darn.

Be careful on the SJ4000 type "brands". While the real one is a knock off of the GoPro, there are also multiple companies in China that knock-off the knock-off, and then knock-off again. They are all branded SJ4000, which makes it really difficult to know if you are getting a real SJ (which by the way, is a pretty darn good camera) or one of the fake-fakes.

Another nice cam is the Mobius. There is a kit that allows you to convert it into a "gopro" type box, so all the gopro accessories work with it. I use it with my small quadcopter. IT was actually designed to be taken apart by the customer and configured into a bunch of different modes.

I just bought one of these after reading reviews on more than one tech site. Even this off brand dash cam has many knock offs, you can try to find the real thing on Ebay or Amazon, but buying it from spytech is the best bet. http://www.spytecinc.com/g1w-1080p-hd-c ... amera.html
For recording your trip, any cam will be limited by memory, true dash cams like the one I bought or the very nice expensive ones from Garmin do a loop, breaking the recorded video into segments, when the card is full, they overwrite the earlier files. If you wanted to save the best bits of a drive, you would need to be connected to another memory source like a lap top, tablet or phone. Then download the files before they were over-written.
