How do you get fleas out of a TD?

Postby ae6black » Sat Aug 06, 2016 2:17 pm

The Dog left behind some unwanted guests that just think I am delicious. Any ideas how to get rid of fleas? I hate to use a bomb in such a small space, plus, I'd really like to not breath that stuff in such a small space even after it's supposedly safe to go back in.

The bomb is what I would consider but I understand your concerns.

You need to break the cycle - egg - larva - flea, one treatment every 30 days for three months to break the cycle (three times total). Get a good spray that works on all three stages, wash all the bedding, vacuum, then spray. Vacuuming stirs up the eggs and makes them hatch, use a disposable bag and throw it out - very important step. Same for house, trailer, yard infestations.

Treat the source, depending on your life style a topical is good but Advantage washes off with water, Frontline washes off with soap even though it is ok with just water, an oral med will kill the any fleas that bite. We use an oral for both Heart Worm and fleas, check with your vet - some dogs have an adverse reaction.

The website, below, gives both chemical and more healthy ways of getting rid of fleas. There are several methods and ideas listed there. One of the ways was quite interesting. It said to put a dehumidifier inside to keep the humidity under 50% for at least 2 days, as fleas and larvae need at least 50% humidity to survive.

Boric acid powder (Borax). You can also use the liquid boric acid. Pull out all stuff that is fabric like, sprinkle borax over everything else. Keep a line next to all corner and wall sections. Let sit for a week. The borax literally sucks the water out of most (not all) insects, primarily their joints to start with. They kind of fall apart and as new ones hatch, if they hatch, they die really fast. Works great on roaches too. Been doing this in the south for decades.

Gawd.....

Bring it up here this fall. You can park it near (but not next to) ours. It'll be bug free in the spring.
