Hurricanes and tiny travel trailers

Postby daveesl77 » Thu Oct 06, 2016 5:11 pm

We live in central Florida, and while not near the coast, we are expecting some decent winds due to the oncoming hurricane Matthew. I've been through a few before, actually did my first solo transatlantic crossing about 2 weeks ahead of David back in the 1970s. Actually, I was about 2 weeks ahead when I left the Canaries and got into Ft. Lauderdale about 3 days before it sort-of hit. As I looked at Conch Fritter over the last few days, and having gone through storms in other types of camping contraptions, I realized that these little beauties we have created or purchased are probably the toughest emergency type shelter you could have at your home. Think about it...most are curved, most have been way over built, most are darned near waterproof. While they are light, they can be easily anchored. They are fully equipped and many can go a number of days without any hookups. I expect a large tree limb would crush it if it were hit right down the middle of the roof, but not so sure the damage would be so great if hit from the side.

And so, while we doubt anything will happen to the house, Conch Fritter has her batteries charged and water and propane tank filled. Hmmm, maybe by Saturday we could actually get over to Flagler Beach and get a spot, which is almost impossible to do. After all, the coast has been evacuated.

Just get some of these and you'd probably be good to go.

I don't think I'd want to stay in a teardrop trailer. With 100+ mph wind I'm sure it would be a teardrop kite! :-)

I think the best part about a teardrop when it comes to hurricanes is that they have wheels under them! Hook it up and get outta Dodge!

What I meant by the teardrop use is not to desire to ride out a storm in one, but to be able to use one in case your home was damaged or something like a multi-day power outage happened. I'd prefer my trailer over a motel room any day.

Yep. A lot of teardroppers in Hurricane country use them as "bug-out" shelters. When you evacuate, inland, there may be a shortage of hotel rooms, and public shelters lack privacy. So, a TD or TTT provides a place to stay until you can go back home. All you need is a place to park.

I have been in 120kmh winds in a valley in the southern alps in mine.

Solid as a rock

Some gusts were bigger than that.
