120V External Outlet

Postby lrrowe » Sun Dec 14, 2014 8:43 pm

I might be chasing a ghost but I have a question on 120V power outlets. I am thinking I might add a 120V outlet somewhere on the exterior of my CT. I am thinking of something like the Marinco Outlets with the flip cover. They are nice and clean looking. I have "googled" such an item and can only find big metal electrical boxes and those gray outdoor waterproof (maybe). I do not to use want either of these items.

What have you TD and CT builders used for outside 120 power if you added one at all? I know i can always run a second line power off of the campground outlets or the generator if used. I was just trying for something different.

Rv repair stores have a round rubber coated 120v outlet it's just a single outlet has a plug cover you just push in the hole

Thanks. The only RV repair shop i know of in my area is Camping World. I will check them out the next time iI am there.
But I think I just found the answer to my own question.

I could just use a Y Splitter like this one.

And then have an adapter that allows the male end to plug into a 30 amp outlet. Pricey, but doable.

Install a rectangular household style box meant for use inside the wall framing. Use the exterior weather resistant flip cover on the outside. If placed where the inside will be under a bed or in a cabinet the box will not be seen on the inside. That is exactly what our past factory made RV's used.

I guess that would work for me. My concern was water getting around it, but if the cover is sealed tight enough, and if i put it on the side versus the front, there would be less exposure for road water spray getting in. It certainly would be lower in cost. Thanks.

They were my first consideration and run a close second to my choices. My problem with them is that I do not want the box protuding on the sides and that leaves either the front, back and underneath. The back is out just because it would be in an inconvenient place. The front is not deseriable because I plan on using most of the best places for other things. And the underneath just does not appeal to,me. This is my dilemma with these boxes.

Drill a hole. Insert and attach to plastic box on backside. It comes with rubber gasket. I used butyl tape. I backed it with a plastic two-gang cover for rigidity.

That is the concept I was looking for, but the one one pictured is for incoming voltage I was planning one for outgoing voltage. If i used that, not only are the plug contacts wrong, but it is a safety hazard leaving contacts exposed for one to touch. I was unable to search and find one like that but with a output socket.

I went the cheap route but I did switch them inside in case of heavy rain.

I misunderstood what you were looking for. Mine is the generator / 120v inlet. It's never hot until power is plugged in. Everything on the other side is regular outlets. No safety hazard.

Bobhenry, you and MtdDon both mentioned this setup. It was my original idea and I think I will just use this approach. I was just hoping for a small hole to cut/drill. I do like the idea of where an internal switch protects/cuts off the outlet that you are using.

I added one to mine. I found that it is nice to be able to plug in a fan or a radio as well as awning lights. I use an out door gray weather tight box and cover. I tied this in to a circuit that had a GFI outlet on it already and found it tripped after a really hard rain one time . The box had filled partway up with water and did not drain out. So I made some drainage spots on the bottom side of the gasket and we will see if that takes care of it but I was glad to have thE GFI.
