Roof Mount Radio Antenna

Postby cablerunners » Fri May 04, 2007 5:45 pm

Hi All,

I've come out of hibernation and have started working on my trailer again.

Has anyone installed a roof mount radio antenna on their trailer?

I'm thinking of visiting the wrecking yard to see if any might work, but if anyone knows which cars to look at.....

I'll post some pictures soon...

Hey Phil, I guess it depends on where you want to mount the antenna and the look your going for. A walk around the salvage yard is a good start. Im thinking maybe a ford focus antenna might work good. Or maybe shelling out some bucks and going with XM system that just requires a stick on antenna and you have a small plastic bump on the roof. Whatever you decide will be cool, cuz you are camping in a tear.

Phil,

Glad to see you came out of seclusion! Welcome back.

There are a couple of ways you can approach it. You can mount to a bracket or directly through the roof. Here's how I approached it:

A lot of the cars nowdays have antennas that rack back at 25 or 30 degrees so they would look very sleek on classic teardrop shape.

Of course I had to get a Mickey Mouse antenna ball for mine....

Phil,

I have a roof mount TV antenna on one of my tiny trailers... Does that count?

My bling for my trailer was a power antenna from JC Whitney. That way I didn't have to remember to put the thing back down. Turn off the radio--it's gone.
Still graced with two eyes and ten fingers (due in no small part to luck!).

Just when you think a problem is solved, an uglier result replaces it.

Does it have to be a roof mount? I put my telescoping antenna on the side and it works great. Usually take along some insulated wire to toss over a tree limb, then with a clothes pin make a connection to the antenna. It makes a huge difference in the amount of stations received.

Sorry about the messy tear photo but it was taken during construction.

I only made it to one wrecking yard this weekend and I didn't find a single roof top Antenna! Not One! :o

I did go to Baxter's (an auto parts store) and they have a universal roof mount that uses two short bars to that toggle into place. I can see how it would work for a car (steel) body but not for my roof. :(

Joanne... That is a sweet bracket you built! I'm impressed, but I'm thinking of something ready made :)

Uncle Denny... That side antenna gives your tear character! I may go the same route.

I pictured it to look like the newer Volks Wagon Beetle type antenna.

I still have other yards to visit... time is the issue

I also did an antenna on the side of the trailer.

Maybe you could find or order a new roof antenna from an online VW store. The 99-05 Golf's and Jetta's had a roof top antenna. The trick would be mounting it, though. It basically bolts from the inside of the roof. It has a bolt through which the cable passes and then there is a nut that spins on from underneath. The roof thickness would need to be just right and you'd have to get to it from underneath. Maybe you could back a small section of the skind with a thin sheet of steel so that your mounting location was more sturdy. Just thinking out loud.

Good luck. :D

VW has been using those antennas since the 1985. They first start appearing on the 16V Siroccos because the engine made too much RF. They moved the antenna to the rear of the roof so that it wouldn't pick up the noise.

The manufacturer of the antenna is FUBA. Do an eBay search for FUBA and a bunch will come up. Just make shure you are getting the base with it.

Hi All,

Well, I've spent too much time without success at the wrecking yards...

I bought a toggle style universal mount from Baxter's for $7.99 and made a bracket mount from a common angle bracket.

The drawback is the wires will have to be surface mounted in the cabinet.
