Tripper,

I don't know whether you got an answer to the stand alone question re: charger. I don't see any reason it could not be used stand alone...
but then steve, mj et al could answer better tban me on that...

Jim - I ordered and received one. It looks like it will work by itself as the 12V power circuits are separate from the charger circuit. I hope to begin wiring as soon as I decide on a location for the converter. The WFCO unit is pretty cool as it looks like it will do everythink I need.
