Gel-Cel Charging

Postby Spadinator » Thu Nov 02, 2006 11:16 pm

Hey all you electrical experts!!! My batteries in my TD are two 12v 7ah Gel-Cel batteries running parallel. Can I charge these with my automotive trickle charger?

NUP!!!

Cheers
Paul

Gel batteries require a special charger and WHY so small. 7A.H. is one tiny battery even when doubled

They were free.......and they have been powering my lights for about 6 months now and I haven't charged them. They were from an old electric scooter.

Spad...gels do take a specific type of charger...many of your newer chargers will do all types...you would have to check with the charger manufacturer to be sure one way or another...

OK thanks guys....I will have to look at my Charger to see if it is up to the task. I do have the original charger for the batteries but it is a 24v system.

IF you limit current flow to about 10 percent of amp hour rating of battery You probaly will not get into any trouble....

So your two batteries in parallel is about 14ah, you can charge at about 1.4 ah and not have a problem...

Besides the special charger the batteries are not deep cycle rated. If you use them as deep cycle they will go dead very quickly. They are designed for like emergency lighting or UPS for computers. Most of there life, they are just in float / maintained charged. Only in an emergency will they power some device for a short time. If they are discharged the batteries will probably not recharge, unless they are fairly new batteries. :o

Spad, sealed lead acid is not gel cell in my book. That is a standard type battery without caps. You should be able to use a standard battery charger on them.
They would be marked gel cell if that's what they are.

Cheers
Paul

ps You know how to get a thread cruising along

Are your batteries like these? http://www.batteriesplus.com/products/6 ... H-120.aspx My guess would be that you would want a 500ma charger for a 7 amp sealed lead acid batteries. There are differences in a gel and non-gel, but they both take a small charger. If you charge with too high of an amp rating the battery could cook or explode. I would take a battery to a battery store and ask for the right charger.

Do not use you car battery charger. Contact the supplier of the battery and get one of those small chargers. It will be cheap. I'm looking at the same battery for my Ultra-Light TD (planing stages).
