Mounting 12vdc plug in 3/4 inch plywood, how'd you do it?

Postby Geron » Fri Mar 23, 2007 3:52 pm

I want to mount a couple 12vdc plugs in my 3/4 inch Electrical race front

Right next to the 120vac receptacles

Image

The space from the bezel and retainer on the plug is slightly under 1/4 " (These are the 12vdc plugs from Wally world). I have two ideas.

1. drill from the back with a 1 1/8" spade bit (the retainer fits a 1 1/8" hole) to within 1/8" of the front of the race. From the front drill back with a 7/8" spade bit using the hole left by the 1 1/8" bit for a guide. The retainer fits into the 1 1/8" hole and screws up to hold the bezel against the 7/8" hole -- Clear as mud???

2. Or . . .drill all the way through with a 1 1/8 " spade bit and design a cute little bezel with a 7/8" hole to glue to the front of the race.

Any other Ideas OR do they sell a 12vdc plug that has the proper width (3/4 inches) between the bezel and the retainer???

I would get some nice stainless or gold outlet blank cover plates (or whatever matches your AC outlets -color wise) , and drill hole large enough to mount DC socket in to "cover plate"... That way all receptacle covers match .... Just drill hole in race way cover large enough for socket to go through...

Dang! I'm headed to HD right now. I was really trying to make it hard.

Now lookee there. Ain't that sweet. now two more for the galley. If you try this get the nylon cover plates. less likely to break.

Thanks Dale

Cool.......

Just exactly what I was suggesting...... Think though I would have preferred metal ones, but then metal ones may not match existing covers... But for future builds it may be something to think about....

I could have changed plates. I have the $.39 ones from HD!! I saw the nylon ones $.59 so that was easier.

   I misspelled break (not brake)

Fixed it though.

mounting plates

Thanks guys (and thanks for the photo MK). I've been rolling different ideas for the light switches around in my head, and until seeing your examples I was stumped. One less thing to worry about figuring out.
