Landscape lights in my tear?

Postby jdarkoregon » Wed Apr 18, 2007 8:05 pm

Walking though Lowes the other day I passed the Low Voltage (12 Volts) Landscape lighting for outside the home. Well, can these lights be used for tears right off the battery without using the transformer? Does anybody have some concerns and/or suggestions about using these things? Is it even worth looking into, or should I just go back to the PickApart Auto parts yard?

Thanks

John

Hi John,

The 12-volt garden variety lamps that are low wattage would work well. Some of the bright 12-volt halogen lamps use a lot of power and create a lot of heat. With some good design work and planning either would work OK. It is really handy to have all your lighting on 12-volts, no need for an extension cord every time you want to illuminate something. I look at those little round recessed 12-volt halogens every time I walk through the lighting department at Home Depot myself.

Hi John,

I used the 12 volt under counter lights hooked directly to the battery in my rear hatch and they work great. I also purchased a pair of lights that are directional from Ikea that use a 12 volt transformer inside the trailer. They also work great. They do put out a lot of heat but it works as to heat the trailer also.

Steve & Keith,

Thanks for responding, I'm going to go back and see what's available. I'll watch the wattage. Its nice to know there are a few options I hadn't considered before. I do have some walkway lights down in the garage I picked up for almost nothing at a garage sale, I'll have to see what I have there too.

Thanks

John

I bought a 3 pack of those "puck" lights at costco (with batteries) for less than $14.
Here's a six pack for $25 (with out batteries).

Thanks guys, I've got my marine battery just sitting there, I need to wire something to it. I'll have to pass on these kind of lights for now and see what I can get to hardwire into the 12V

Jim, It doesn't look like I'm making the Dam gathering, I'm behind schedule :(

John

It doesn't have to be completely done to go camping.

John,
If need be, leave the unfinished tear at home, grab a tent and head on down!
You won't regret making the trip to Shasta without the tear.
Besides, I don't wanna be the only "Soft-Sider" at the event.
BTW-This will be my third trip in a row to the Dam Gathering without a completed tear in tow.
(Grant says I gotta go seven years in a row to tie his record)

God I hope not...
Even though this is will be my third Dam, it only marks the end of my second year.
I'll have the TempTear ready enough to tow for the FDOS deal at AW Way complete with DO slide out cooking table, but it is gonna be a while yet on the Chieftain... Maybe sometime next summer I hope. :?

What about the solar powered landscape lights????
My wife had me remulching the beds Sat. and we put in some solar powered LED landscape lights.

Set them outside during the day. Have a holder to put them in at night. But, How would you turn them off. there is no switch -- at least not on the ones we got. have to remove the battery.

Geron, I picked up some yesterday that are like flowers in a rock and they do have an on/off switch.

Ok, Make sure they have a switch and There you have light as long as the batteries last and the Sun shines. I checked ours this morning and after burning all night the led still lit when I covered the photo e Cell.

Come to think of it, if the Sun don't shine you prolly won't need the lights :o
