Questions about AC/DC converters on EBAY

Postby cracker39 » Tue Sep 20, 2005 7:57 am

Sorry to be such a nuisance, but the closer I get to stating, the more questions I come up with. I'm trying to find adequate parts that won't break the bank. I 've found 30 amp AC/DC converters that cost nearly $200.

Can anyone with experience with AC/DC converters tell me if these would work for RV use? They appear to be made for home use, and inteneded to power electronics, but look like they would supply the necessary 12VDC power I need for lights and a fan. I can't imagine using more than 5 or 6 amps (couple of lights and the fan). I guess the question may be will they hold up in a trailer, even if mounted on a cushion of foam to absorb bumps.

PS. I'm still considering using a new PC popwer supply that I have. I think it is a 250 watt unit. That should produce close to 20 amps of power. Anyone try this yet?

OOPS...found more info on the PC power supplies. That quoted wattage is for the lower power, probably +5.5V. Apparently, a 250W PS will only output approximately 8 amps at +12V, not 20. That may not be enough. I recomputed the TV at about 5 amps at 100% efficiency on an inverter, but at 80% (worst case), it would pull about 6 amps. The fan will use about 2 amps on high and the lights 1 or 2. so, I don't think the PC PS will do the job.

I bought a Centurian 1000 30 Amp (I think) for my Teardrop. I wired it up and it works perfectly. I paid $26.00 for the unit and based on that, the person on Ebay wants far too much - at least for Teardrop usage. I figure I won't have to hook up a battery charger as I'll mostly be using the trailer at state/fed campgrounds.

A new one from the site MadJack posted is $225. Same thing, except older model. There was a lot of them on ebay for awhile. Randy used one of these on the Titan.

If all else fails look around for a junked AMD CPU PC Power Supply. They are usually 350-680 watts and are good for 10 to 22 amps at 12 volts. I modified a 400 watt one and it is rated at 14 amps at 12 volts. Most any mom and pop PC store or flea market will have them laying around CHEAP.

Modifying one takes about 30 minutes... Instructions are on the web and there have been threads on this board with links.

Also you can do a search on eBay on ATX Power Supplies to find them.

A few examples:

Here is a cheap 400 watt (rated 10 amp @ 12 v) on Ebay for $5.95 _ $13.95 for shipping

Here is a cheap 680 watt (rated 22 amp @ 12 v) on Ebay for $14.95 _ $15.95 for shipping

I thought about using a PC power supply and have one I think is 300 or 350 watts. It came with a case I ordered, but I ordered the upgrade to 450 watts and they sent both of them. So, I only paid about $10 more for the case and got two power supplies. But, I was told about the 60 amp CS6000 and think I'll get one of those. I can get it for $50 plus shipping, without the 12V fuses or 115VAC breakers. Those items are available at auto parts stores and HD. I like the unit and Randy has one. He is the one who put me in touch with a guy who sells the CS6000. I saw them going on EBAY for $17 to $22 over his price, plus $20 shipping.

Here is a link to see it. I can give you the email address of the guy who sells them if anyone is interested.
