Television recommendations :specific requirements

Postby deceiver » Fri Jul 31, 2015 5:17 pm

I'm looking for a TV for my camper. I have specific needs.

It needs to be 19" to around 24" or so
Has to be 12 volts
Needs to have a USB port that will play movies (smart tv)
LED

I don't need it to have a built in DVD player so that doesn't matter.

All I see online is odd brands and most don't meet the expectations. Anyone been up this alley and have any recommendations?

Thanks.

Kogans the way to go.
They are good value for money and good quality.i think thier only avaliable online.
You can get a full hd smart tv for about 260 australian or 100 less for a full hd only.
Pretty sure they'd be available there

Unfortunately they only seem to be available in Australia and a few European countries. In the US they have a webpage but no TV's in it.

Why not a standard flat-screen from Walmart, etc., along with a small 100 +/- watt plug in inverter for about $20? My older Sony 32" pulls 55-110 watts depending on the back-light brightness. That would certainly open up your options for other wanted features, and probably go easier on your budget also. You could also look at truck stops for 12v versions, but more$$$$$

Yes, I've seen the 12 volt TV's. They are either Naxa, Axess, or Supersonic which often have all the features I need but I wonder about the reliability. Then there is Jensen. Probably a well made unit but much more expensive and the sticking point is that they seem to be stuck in the past. They are the same flat screens they were selling 5 yrs ago. Features are very limited.

I could go with one that is just 110 volts. thing is the RV ones consume about 35 watts. I don't know why but a lot less than ones made for the house. My experience with inverters isn't that great. Seems that the inverter sucks up more power than what I'm trying to power. I had a 300 watt one (small) in my previous teardrop. It didn't take that long to drain the battery.

What I'm looking for here is one of two things.

Anyone find a quality 12 volt with the specs I need or anyone have reasonable luck with the few brands that are available so I can make a decision on one to purchase.

You might check out this TV from BestBuy . I bought the same TV about 11/2 year ago .It does run on AC but the cord/transformer drops the voltage down to 12VDC so it should run on a battery & draw very little current .Plus at $79 you can't go wrong . Also , it has a USB port for plug ins ........

I was about to suggest the same thing. Most new LED TVs use a 120v AC to 19.6v DC converter to power the electronics (just like new notebooks). You can get a 12v DC to 19.6v DC power supply relatively cheap and use it to power the TV in the TD.

Thanks for the info... might be an option with a tv somewhat like this one. It has a USB port but doesn't play movies as far as I can see. Not 'smart'. If you have a TV with smart capabilites and USB you can load up a thumb drive with dozens of movies and play them on the tv..

Thanks.

Samsung's 22" flat screen is a 12 volt model. Anything larger in their line goes to 110v.

Thanks, but upon closer checking online on truckers forums I find that it's listed as 12 volts but the stepdown transformer is actually 14.2 volts. ...

We have the NAXA which we are going to put into the Mad Dash. Runs on 12V or 110/120V. We'll let you know how that works out.

Mike...

I actually have one on order from Amazon right now. Had to decide on something. Does what I want, just hope it can last a couple years.
