I'm surprised so few mentioned headlamps. Wife and I were with an outdoor club years ago and headlamps were by far the preferred light to read and task by. Hand held flashlights were used when folks needed a temporary burst of light while walking or locating. The problem of headlamps is when you look up at your partner you blind them. 8>(

These are fairly "spendy" for a small flashlight, but they will clip onto a baseball cap & work for reading & working. My wife used one when we went into a lava tube up in Flagstaff for a "hike" last summer.

You don't need to spend $40 for a reading light, but they work well enough & last a long time with the single CR123 battery on low power. They also have a magnetic base & will function as a work light in a pinch at night or under the truck. They are small, compact & weigh next to nothing. No, I don't work for the company, just like this light!

The time you spend planning is more important than the time you spend building.........

I made a removable 12V LED strip that hangs from the exterior trim for just the situation you've described- reading outside with a kindle:

Then there's that old favorite:

One of the items I ordered in the "shotgun" approach was an LED clamp light with a long enough goose neck that it can be clamped to the back of the chair and peer over the shoulder. It came a couple of weeks ago from China. I checked the wrong box and it has a European two pin plug, but since I plan on running it from 12VDC, I cut the plug which has the "driver" and hooked it up to 12V and it works fine. I will set it up with Anderson Power Poles.
