If you are thinking DIY solar Builditsolar.com is a great site. the owner of the site does not sell anything.
Here is the system I built.

Yes,if the timeline in the present house does not compute it makes no sense. There is a Rheem system, 75 gallon tank, with roof top panels that sells at about $5500 last time I looked. And rubs on gas when the sun heated water runs out. Also an electric model IIRC.

Doing it with PV..... how have you calculated the heater elements and panels? I looked into using "wasted" PV power from our panels to heat water and found issues. Such as the resistance of the heater elements "misbehaves" when the elements receive a voltage lower than their design. A couple other things to, but that was almost 10 years ago now and I forget all the potential problems. And it was with a fairly small PV array which also reduced the potential effectiveness.

We have a small off grid cabin we built ourselves in the NM mountains; small PV solar system; 624 watts PV, Outback CC & inverter/charger ... http://countryplans.com/smf/index.php?topic=2335.0

I am still a babe in the woods when it comes to this topic. I am reading what I can in order to take the next step. (I.e., I am self taught.

Here are a few links I am reviewing right now.

Bob:

That hybrid solar hot water controller has gotten my attention. I'm wondering if there is something cheaper than this guy's $240 controller?

I hope somebody smarter than I chimes in.

FWIW, here are some links to a forum where the techluck PV water heating controller gets mentioned.

All are on NAWS, Northern AZ Wind & Sun

From one of the links.....this seems to have merit to look further into.....

I believe the SRCC OG-300 certification means it qualifies for the tax credit

Now my head is spinning. There are sure many nay sayers in these links. I am not saying they are wrong though. Guess I need to slow down on this (my) project until I understand it better. And if the OP (asianflava) wishes us to not take over his thread anymore, I can start a new one later.

Oh and thanks for your taking the time to find and post these helpful links MtnDon.

FWIW the guy who mentioned the PV Wand in one of those links (Dave) is a friend and has decades of experience in designing PV systems for off gridders both on land and sea.

No negative vibes meant. Sorry if it sounded like that.
