Renogy rugged power pack

Postby tearlurker » Tue May 07, 2019 6:58 am

I saw this and thought it might suit my needs:

https://www.renogy.com/renogy-rugged-power-pack

It’s has a 36Ah lithium battery, solar charge controller, inverter, and charger all built in. And it’s 12 pounds. Ideally I would connect it to a fuse block to run my fantastic fan and LED lights. There is a DC out port which uses a cigarette lighter type port. I’m thinking I will cut of one end of the cable and attach the leads to the fuse block or make a cable with a heavier gauge wire.

Thoughts?

As long as 36 ah meets your needs, go for it. Looks like a tidy little package.

How fast can it recharge off 12 or 24V, amp rate?

Link to replacement batteries?

I don’t know but 6-8 hours with a 70w charger. Here are the specs:

Just to point out, a Fanastic Fan uses 1 to 3 Amp. This battery has (36AH @ 80% usage =) 29 AH. Eight hours on high is 24 AH. So not that much extra power.

Crunching the numbers, the recharging appears to be a low amp affair, more like a trickle charger. Not sure if that is due to the internal circuits or the chargers.

I am surprised they market it as emergency backup for the home. Our emergency generator is small, 7KW, with a natural gas fuel feed. Given the distribution panel, we cannot run the electric range or dryer. We can run a frig, microwave, gas furnace and lights more or less indefinitely. Even our portable 2KW generator with between 4 and 6 hours per tank of fuel (20AH * 4 = 80AH (120AH) @120V or 800AH (1200AH) @12VDC) is huge compared to 36AH battery.

Key questions to get answered IMO.

Internal "protective" electronics often cripple the ability to fast charge, even though the actual battery chemistry has no problem with it.

And the battery itself is a consumable, it it only lasts a month past warranty, tossing out the whole box would be a waste.

Good for screen gadgets and LED lights, as you say a small fan.

True for anything portable though, home appliances are thirsty beasts, even an EV bank would run down quick keeping say a freezer going, and aircon, forget it, even a tiny one is 100Ah per hour of runtime.

Need an actual generator for that.

This whole market segment is full of scammers, even the term "solar generator is fraudulent"

a DIY box is much better value

Yeah, I wouldn’t use this for home emergency power. I have a propane powered generator for that. I suppose I could go with 100Ah AGM battery but then I need all the additional items as well. I’m just not that jazzed about lugging an extra 60+ pound battery around.
