Deep Cycle battery safety

Postby DoctahDeane » Fri Apr 17, 2020 7:45 pm

Was all set to start installation of this battery in a box that sits under the trailer, accessible from inside the trailer in a hatch space that ultimately, would be under the sleeping quarters. Then I read something about ventilation and checked with an old friend (mechanic) who said that even though sealed, tat ventilation is recommended and that the battery has valves that open if internal pressure goes above a certain point, releasing hydrogen gas. He thought that MAYBE there might be a vent kit. I have not looked into that yet. The battery is a VMAX AGM Deep Cycle battery.

Any feedback about this? I'm concerned now. My two other options are in the galley, under the slide out stove. Plenty of room there for the battery and charger but it would be under the stove top (propane). Issue? And, finally, I suppose I could put it in the tongue box but presently, that is where the 5lb propane tank sits, in bracket. My primary concern there is that it would add 65lbs to the tongue weight.

Would appreciate any and all input, thanks a lot, have a nice weekend.

No an SLA batt vents such tiny amounts not to worry, both AGM and GEL.

Even FLA, smell only bothers some.

Natural ventilation is plenty, don't seal up the box no worries.

Reassuring- thanks! when you say don’t seal the box assuming you mean battery box? I just have a tray and bracket so that would seem to be ok I hope

Yes, the key factors are

acid-proof tray, plastic or purpose-designed paint

well secured so it can't shift in a collision

non-conducting lid so you won't short across the posts

That’s what I have. Thanks again.
