running internal lights off of a USB phone battery pack?

Postby Betonhaus » Fri Apr 02, 2021 4:20 pm

I'm wondering if the trailer doesn't have any appliances then instead of dealing with figuring out how to keep a standard car battery charged, you could have the internal wiring be 5v and use usb powered LED lights and fans throughout, which is fed by a large USB battery pack (*like 20,000+mAH or something) you could detach and plug into a charger in your car or house as needed?

I usually need to run a fan all night, otherwise, that would work great.

You could make one of these and charge it from your tow vehicle's Cigarette lighter. Could run LED lighting, a small fan, charge a phone.. etc.. Can also charge with a small solar panel... some call these "Solar Generators".. which doesn't make sense.. Just a portable AC/DC power pack with decent capacity. I literally just built this earlier this week. A DIY option to the Yeti or Jackery.

Simple answer: Sure you can! Just remember you're only dealing with 20ah and low draw. Don't push them just because you have that amperage. Read the spec's and learn what the max draw is (and stay well below).

I made up two of these for the overlander mainly due to not having a USB port where I ended up wanting one. USB fans and reading lights are all we use them for.

That was cool. I was curious why you didn’t add powerpoles too?

I may still do that. Easy to mod this.

Definitely does look easy. I was curious because you mentioned radio use.

What cells and bms did you use?

The cells are made by EVE and the BMS is a Daly. My go box radios all have cigarette lighter plugs on them so they can be powered in a vehicle..
