Renogy DC On-Board Charger

Postby cjlangellier » Wed May 05, 2021 8:15 am

I'm curious if any of you have any direct experience with the Renogy DC On-Board charger? I'm wanting to have solar and DC-DC charging options and this seemed like a clean, cost effective way to combine both systems into one. There are a couple things I'm curious about. How much heat does this thing put off? I notice it has a pretty large heat sink on the back of the box. Do I need the bluetooth module to customize charging profiles for different battery types? Down the line, I intend to upgrade to a lithium battery.

At present, I'm planning on the following electrical system:

-AGM 100ah battery
-175W Renogy flexible solar panel
-Progressive Dynamics PD4045 converter/power center (no inverter. we don't run much 110 power and have a backup generator if we get in a tough spot boondocking)
-Renogy DC On-Board 30A charger with built in MPPT controller

If I've done my research appropriately, I should have the following charging options.
-DC-DC when towing
-Solar when Boondocking
-Shore Power when conventional camping

That charger is a good one, you do need the dongle if you want custom charge profiles, but their lifepo4 curve is a decent one. It will put off heat and get warm, just make sure you have some airflow ie dont mount it in a closed box.

Edit it is externally changable to built in battery types, its just custom that take the dongle.

Thank you! This was exactly the info I was looking for. I went ahead and placed an order with Renogy. They have a great sale going on this charger and the flexible panels. Plus I was able to find an additional $50 off coupon code.
