A Brief Natural History of Restrooms Through Time

"Fear of not having access to a toilet or loo"
Some who can't get their loo side tent set uP fast enough may have experienced
this phobia while camping or on the road where there is no where to stop.

There are those with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBM). Some have a
fear of no toilet paper. Many of us don't like to use dirty public restrooms
for cleanliness reasons as well as safety reasons.

Ya know, looking at that piece of porcelain in the floor brings back memories..... I guess I'll have to explain that.

While stationed in Okinawa, I went to the hospital in Naha to donate for the local blood drive. I didn't speak Japanese but was in dire need to reeive my bladder. I found an employee who seemed to understand my plight. He directed me to the "room". I entered and having seen the porcelain hole before, began to do my thing. The door opened behind me (Multiple holes, you know), and a woman entered, pulled up her skirt kinda thing and squatted 2 holes down.

Turns out, the loo's were unisex! Me at the tender age of 18 wasn't sure what to do. I finished up VERY quickly!!!
. :? :?

Was I ever embarrassed.

I spent about 15 years travelling around world for my job (sounds exotic - wasn't) and the one thing they never tell you in any guide book or anywhere else is: "what are the male and female toilet symbols in this country?"

You can do advanced currency calculations and translate high-minded conversations about the fraternal relations between your countries, but the information to just empty your bladder without embarrassment is never there!

I was never sure in Russia, but I think it is:
- male symbol: point-down triangle with circle over it
- female symbol: point-up triangle with circle over it

I would think that it would be the other way around.

I'm pretty sure that's the right way round as I remember it by:
- man has broad shoulders tapering to narrow waist;
- woman has narrow waist and skirt flowing out below waist.

I've found an example from Tajikistan (former Soviet republic) that says "girls left, boys right":

But then I also worked in Poland where the women's symbol is a circle while the men's is a triangle - but the triangle can be either way up!

And for Mexico and most of Latin America:
- for men, top hat
- for women, high heel shoe

But this one is worth showing!

Is that "Squat in the Woods / NOT" sign from Germany?

Wonder what the sign actually says?

Steve,

Word for word, (from the German-English dictionary) it means "toilet not use".

Seeing the Japanese toilets, (hole in the floor) brought back memories. If I remember correctly, the toilets are very sanitary as you never touch them (hopefully). But on the other hand, there would be a little metal cup chained to some of the drinking foutains in banks and stores that everyone would drink out of. Go figure.....
And we would always take off our paints befor using the toilets. You never wanted to drop your walet or keys down one of them. And some were flushable, too. Those were pretty clean.

I understand Russian Coke machines used to be that way. May still be for all I know.

When I visited a Ukrainian (ie, former Soviet Union) shipyard they had some quite old refrigerated drinking fountains around the place with a drinking cup on a chain.

BUT, there was a recess in the front of the machine - you put the cup, upside-down, into the recess and pressed down, whereupon the inside of the cup got sprayed with water and a pair of rotating circular brushes cleaned the cup rim inside and out.

Cool, or what? But, of course, the cleaning part of it was broken down when I saw it....
