citronella torch lamps

Postby oklahomajewel » Tue Jul 10, 2007 3:51 pm

well , all this rain and humidity (thunderstorms and rain again last night / this morning) has got the mosquitos out like crazy !!!! It's like a plague!!!

I have one of the citronella torch lamps and thought of buying some more, to circle around the sitting area at my campsite....

Do they really help?

I don't know, but Yard Guard and lots of Deep Woods Off works. But then I'm not a tree hugger and I don't mind using pesticides to get rid of pests!!!

Sorry..... Just telling it like it is for me!

Julie.

If you want to use a repellent with an other than a Deet based formula, try Absorbine SuperShield Green. It's supposed to be a horse product, but we've been using on ourselves as well as the animals for years. And no, my nose hasn't fallen off or anything like that. Actually, the bottle does state it is suitable for use on horses, ponies, livestock, pets, humans.

It needs to be used more often than a Deet based product, but since it smells like toothpaste that's not so bad. It a blend of a bunch of different botanicals.

Seems to work with most flying insects.

Julie...I think they work, but Marcia and I have found that you have to set out a number of those candles or tiki torches around your sitting area. Maybe it is the wall of flame that keeps them out!!!

skeeters like carbon dioxide and humidity; they 'go to' breath.

citronella helps, but you need enough to make you wonder if you're stunt-doubling Jeanne d'Arc...

Try BUGFROG sunblock 8)
I have trouble with sweeting off sunblockers while working. You might check it out. It is at Academy's and I'm sure other places.

Good luck with the flying blood suckers we have the same problem where I live with all the rain.

See ya at PJ in a few weeks.

I think the only thing the torches do , is light up the area so the big mosquitoes can find ya faster ,so the little ones die off!!!

Have used Avon skin-so-soft each time we are bothered and it works!!

I have psoriasis so I go thru gallons of it a year to help control the itching and I truthfully can not tell you the last time I donated a pint to one of our pesky friends

In the good old days they ate me up. I could hear them plotting " Go for the chubby guy he's delicious " :)

The trouble with DEET products is, once you put it on, every thing you eat tastes like DEET.
In my backpacking days, I always had a set of light weight long sleeved/legged clothes that I treated with Permethrin before the trip. When I was using a tarp and bug net, I applied it to the net as well.
First time I tried it was on a 93 mile trip around Mt.Rainier.
When we set up the tarp with the treated bug net under it, all the bugs that were torturing us on the trail just went away.

We do have some of those Citronella candles, but I think they are mostly for atmosphere, & maybe to annoy the biters.

skin-so-soft isn't bad for a good smelling bug repellant, but I like 3M's "Ultrathon" the best so far. It smells very "chemical" but the bugs don't like it.

Walmart sells it and it works pretty well.

I wonder it there is an "Ultrathon" torch?

This Flamethrower is more in line with what Warpony had in mind for mosquitos abatement.
I can see you thinking Jeff. ;)
The BullFrog does work for me for years even in Madjack area south from Shreveport to Grand Isle rebuilding houses after Andrew.

I would agree with Kurt. I've used both but the ultrathon works best for skeeters and ticks. It's around 28 % deet but formulated to last 6 hours and it works.
