I know this has been discussed but I'm having trouble finding the threads.

I'm looking at some I-R or laser thermometers priced from $28-120$ on the web.

Smaller and less expensive the better.

Any suggestions or opininons.

Haven't compared it to other resistance type digitals I have so I can't swear by its accuracy. Price was close to right.

Curiosity got the better of me. I took some "shots" at some known temps.

Pot of boiling water for coffee with analog therm. +- 4-5 degrees

Digital resistance therm with probe in cup of hot water -- dead on within +- tenths

Thermocouple on digital readout in Coffee Roaster -- again dead on

Seems accurate.

I got a Raytek at Napa Auto Parts last year and am happy with it.
It was around $50-$60 and was neither top of the line, or bottom, though closer to bottom than top...
Extreme accuracy isn't needed by most of us for general temperature tests... most times, the "precise" temperature isn't as important as knowing if something is hotter than it should be...

As you've found, the "cheap" ones can be had for $20.00 plus shipping.

Mine works well for checking wheel bearings, engine temps, and just about anything else you can think of!

This one might be all I need. I just want to check temps on the cast iron stuff.

I have a cheapy Harbor Freight one. Comes in handy to measure the temps on the Dutch Ovens and to shoot the trailer hubs at rest stops.

That is a good Idea about the hubs and Dutch over temps.

I thought thats all they were for? I use it to find out if the kids have a fever,and check if the ice cream is still cold. Oh yeah one time I tried to check the temperature of the sun, it was not consistent with the reading what else could I use it for.....?

I got a Ray Tek about 5 years ago when I was inspecting homes for resale. Cheaper models available now. I use it on a lot of things. Waffle iron temps, DO temps, stove temps in the tear for clearances, hub temps, insulation leaks in the house, HVAC, blocked radiators in the Rambler, conversation piece at a gathering, not to mention beer temps...invaluable!!! Doug

You think a laser temp probe is a conversation piece, imagine what a decibel meter can get ya.
