I got this in an email today, haven't run it through snoopes or anything like that, thought I'd post it here. Just in case.

Hey guys. I was at a meth training/workshop yesterday and there was a lot of great new information presented. I wanted to let you all know about one thing that I was not aware of. Meth cooks are getting the propane tanks from the exchanges at Wal-Mart, Kroger, etc. and emptying them of the propane. Then, they are filling them with anhydrous ammonia (which they now have a recipe for by the way). After they are finished with them, they return them to the store. They are then refilled with propane and sent back for you and me to buy. Anhydrous ammonia is very corrosive and weakens the structure of the tank. It can be very dangerous when mixed with propane and hooked up to our grills, etc.

According to our presenter, you should inspect the propane tank for any blue or greenish residue around the valve areas. If it is present, refuse to purchase that one.

Just felt a duty to warn. Have a great weekend.

Just another reason I would NEVER get my propane using the exchange system. I'll keep my own tank and get it refilled.

Good thing I take my tank to be refilled too. It cheeper than exchanging it.

Any time I get an email like this, I immediately go to Snopes. There is so much "information" floating around in emails these days that ranges from mostly true, to partially true, to flat out false, you have to verify everything.

This one at least does present a somewhat plausible situation.

With big elections coming up in the fall, I can only imagine what will be flying around the internet about the major candidates -- and how many people will decide on a candidate based on email rumors.

Thanks for the post, Ivar, and thanks for the Snopes link, Paul.

To put alittle calm into this story, I work with propane and have seen the tanks they use and return. What the ammonia does to brass is eat the metal. what I mean by this is it will be "pitted" most reputable vendors check the tanks before re-filling them so there is little need to worry also to note, the sealer they use when putting a new valve in is usually green or green/blue colored, don't be paranoid but still use good judgement and always check the tank over (even new ones) when purchasing or exchanging. Happy tearing!
