Suggestions for a tent?

Postby retnavycpo » Fri Jul 10, 2009 8:02 pm

Ok, it LOOKS like (right now at least) that I will be headed to Michigan to get that wooden teardrop. I am SO excited!

But now I need recommendations for a tent to buy. You see, I plan on taking my Rottweiler, "Chief", on most, if not all my trips. He loves to go "bye bye", and he travels just fine. I just need to stop every hour or so to let him get some excercise (which is fine, because I have never been a marathon driver).

Anyway, I doubt I'll have him in the teardrop with me. He isn't exactly a small dog. Besides, I thought having a tent in addition to the teardrop might be a good idea?

Comments? Suggestions on size? Type? Where to buy? There are so many brands available. I have no clue what to look for. That is the great thing about this forum. YOU FOLKS DO!!!

Thanks.

I got into Teardrops ad tiny trailer so I'd never have to set up a tent again.
How about one of those pop-up tents? They fold flat in a circle but then you snap them open. They take some used to refolding them up, but it beats poles and pegs. Check online for self-erecting or pop-up tents. They as well sell pet tents.

Even if I CAN get my dog inside the teardrop, I don't think I'd want to.

To be more blunt, when (not if) he farts.....it would be disasterous! So he gets his own tent!

OK I can't resist it has to be a pup tent!
Seriously a kennel will be about the only thing that is Rottweiler resistant. There are various portable pens that are available with roof used for show dogs.

My Rott is extremely friendly and docile. A portable pen for him would have to be big, and not sure I want to add the extra weight!

Need to think about this one for a bit. I will come up with something!

Thanks.

Note there is a thread concerning dogs and tears including some one who made a Rottweiler bunk bed and another who made a dog cabin attached to one of the doors.

If it's just for the dog, check out one of these type of kennels. We have two, one for each dog, and they love them. Lots of ventilation, etc. We bought extra big since we bought them when our dogs were already adults and we didn't need to keep it small for potty training.

They are MUCH easier to set up than a tent, and mine has tent stake gromits in the corners to stake it down in case of wind. My dogs love them.

We have THIS one:
http://www.westcoastpetsupply.com/2/Noz ... Dog-Crate/
for our dog who is as tall as a Rottie (but half the weight... he's part poodle and has TALL, LONG legs).

They also sell this one that is bigger:
http://www.westcoastpetsupply.com/2/fir ... oft-crate/

I've also seen these pet tents... they have the same set up as a tent, but are much cheaper:

As far as human tents, we've had GREAT luck with our Sierra Designs backpacking tent. It's one of the quicker ones to set up I've ever touched, and is in perfect shape after over 10 years of heavy use. It's never leaked (I did and do seal the seams), and hasn't ever blown over in any windstorm (and I've been in some doozies) EXCEPT when staked in sand. The poles and elastic are great. It's a 4 season tent, so it does get a little stuffy in the summer, but I bet the 3 seasons are great.

We had AWFUL luck with a cheaper Coleman tent we bought... it collapsed and the elastic in the stakes broke in the first storm it encountered. A friends did the same a month ago... his was a much nicer Coleman tent.

We are newbie's...taking our first trips in our almost finished tear...don't have a rott...but both trips have been with kids...we bought a SPORTZ SUV tent from Costco and found it to be fairly quick to set up. I tuck the fly under the mattress and use a piece of foam pipe insulation over the bottom of the door t secure it an keep from snagging it.

These images at least show the tent on the tear...it's 4 person nice but not HUGE.

Works for us anyway!!

Which model of Sportz SUV tent do you have ??

And, how do you attach the "sock" to the side of your TD
so critters don't get in ?? I thought about attaching one
to the rear over the hatch.

Thanks for any info. ( other photos ? )

We purchased the Dome 2 Go from Costco for 139.00 earlier this year...it appears to be unavailable right now. I think it was a good deal. But the idea is the same.

Anyway....the sock has a zippered window/door. We unzip it and and tuck it under the mattress with the door to the tear open. Then I attach a piece of split pipe insulation over the door jam..it holds the tent fabric up without snagging or tearing.

The tent has several straps designed to use fenders and such to attach to securely. We put grommets in the straps...you could still use them as intended...and pull them over the tear using bungee cords. Snugs up fairly well...would have to put a rainfly or canopy over in case of rain tho....I'll try to take some good pics next time we set it up!

Thanks, Cathy !!

I was looking at doing the same thing for my kids.
They are a little older than yours, but still need space.

We actually "slept" 3 adult sized people, a 10 year old,
and our Beagle, Lacey in our Wazat. Now that was crowded! :)

It was so hot, everybody wanted the A/C. Not much sleep though.

Thanks again.

If you are just sheltering the dog I would shy away from a tent and get a pop up with the optional sides. Most tents have a floor and doggies have toenails not a good combo. During the day maybe he will let you share some of the shade in his "Dog house" . It makes a great setting room for you and a good place for him overnight.
Growing older but not up !

The Sportz-SUV tent idea would be wise -- with your pup always leashed -- the teardrop door open and his leash secured to something solid.

I'd keep him secured in case a raccoon, skunk or whatever comes near the tent during the night. Any tent can be easily exited by a determined dog with claws.

A tarp on the tent floor will protect it from being punctured by dog claws or anything else. Should also have a ground cloth under the tent, of course.

Good luck and congrats on the new teardrop.

P.S. You might also look into a pill designed to alleviate dog farts.
