Where to camp for Carlsbad Caverns

Postby alffink » Fri Jul 31, 2009 11:00 am

OK Guys & Gals

Karen and I have just started plans for a trip to Carlsbad Caverns NP
I know that there is no camping in the park except for the backpackers
Soooo, who has a favorite Teardrop freindly campground in the area?
We will probably plan for an off season trip pobably early Fall or Late Spring.

Thanks

Al, never been in that area camping but the recent gathering held at CloudCroft is centrally located between Carlsbad, Roswell and Almagordo and should be a spot to consider.........

MadJack
Lower Fir was a beautiful location but it was a group site and would still be a couple hours or more away from Carlsbad through the mountains Not very conveniant to the NP

Will

I'll have to check out Bottomless.Lakes still a bit far north of Carlsbad but still more local than Cloudcroft

It's almost an hour and a half south of there but the Guadalupe Mtns NP has a gorgeous campground.

Went thru there in early May this year coming home from El Paso (spent a half-day at Hueco Tanks) and wished I could've stayed overnight.

Been awaiting more replies to this. Like others have said, we've always stayed at either Guadalupe Mountains NP,(in TX) or Bottomless Pit SP(in NM). Both are really nice.

Guadalupe mtns, wherein resides Texas' tallest mountain is in the middle of nowhere, and has great hiking.

Bottomless lakes is close to Roswell, but doesn't feel like you're next to a big town. Others have posted their pics somewhere on here, but I couldn't find them. The camping spots along the "big" lake are real pretty. Beautiful sunsets. The salt-water is nice and refreshing to swim in on a hot day.

Back to the original question...isn't there any place closer to White's City or Carlsbad, NM?

Can't vouch, but check this out...

I'll give it a try next time we head out that way.

When we were through there a couple months ago there was an ad running on a Carlsbad billboard for a manager for White's City. It wasn't open at all.

I understand it sold on E-Bay a couple years ago. The road from about a mile southwest of town (before the caverns) to the NM/TX line was under construction at the time we drove through.

I found a link from the Carlsbad CoC here:
http://carlsbadchamber.com/index.php?op ... &Itemid=65

with a list of places to stay.

Thanks for all the responses, gives me a place to start planning for the area. As my Dad said just last night, Carlsbad Caverns is a place to stop and experience, but not enough in the NP to spend any real time.
So I guess we will plan a circle route be in the Roswell area comming or going, stop at the caverns, stay in the Guadlupes at least one night, make the trip back through Douglas, Bisbee and Tombstone AZ, probably stay at the Shady Dell in Bisbee looks as though I can turn this into a nice one week road trip

Karen wants to make a Grand Canyon trip in the near future also, probably North Rim, but New Mexico is next.

Thanks again.

Al, another possible alternative to Guadalupe Mtns is a little further south at Davis Mountains SP in Fort Davis, TX. Its a beautiful park with nice campgrounds. There's a lot of history in Fort Davis. Being an astronomer, you'd definitely appreciate the McDonald Observatory nearby as well. We don't go to the park without going to a "star-party" at the Observatory.

We stayed at White City in the campground. Not what I would consider prime camping but the location was great especially if you are staying for the night program.

Thanks for all the tips

Joshua
Ft Davis and the McDonald Observatory is a great idea
but I will save that for a much larger road trip also in the planning stages
California to Georgia via the 10, Georgia to Indiana to Iowa back to California, to do this right I figure I need a minimum of three weeks preferably four. so..... May have to wait for my retirement, hopefully about 18 months.

thanks again
