plastic wire ties

Postby Chip » Sun Aug 09, 2009 6:37 am

Thought I would share a new found friend,,, its not a complete substitute for duct tape but its dang close,,, Plastic Wire Ties,,, I bet I use a doz or more of these suckers every time out,,, holding lights up on easy up frame,, securing a side tarp on easy up,,, anywhere ya need a loop to tie stuff, When its time for packing up, just cut em loose and you ready to put something away,,, These suckers are handier than a back pocket on a T-shirt,, and cheap,,, just remember to police up the area of all the used ones

Oh you know it - I use 'em big time too. Yes, plastic zip ties are right up there with duct tape... and we all know how holy duct tape is.
I mounted my bike baskets to my rack completely with zip ties rather than the supplied metal clamps and it's much stronger too when multiple 75 lb ties are used.

FYI...not only are zip ties similar to a cats hind leg, you can now get them with an eyelet molded into them for mounting...VERY HANDY when running those long runs of wire.........

I love those things. They're more handy than bailing wire. I used really big zip ties to mount my spare to a shelf underneath my frame, not to mention securing wire looms, tubing etc. You need a good supply of various sizes and then just keep them on hand.

One thing I learned -- there can a big difference in quality among various suppliers that you might not expect. The cheap ones from HF failed to work at least half the time. The little clip thingy that grips the tie in the slot simply broke off when trying to zip them tight.

Just to be clear, I can't take credit for the wire tie on the drive shaft photo (or idea). I believe it was posted on the Expedition Portal website. It's a good practical joke though.

I use them a ton. In fact I bought a plastic welding tube holder so I can carry lots of tie straps without them falling out all over the place. One thing to remember, most if any are not UV resilient and will break down in the sun. That limits their use in exposed environments to less than a year. I used some heavy duty ones to strap down the sides of a portable shelter and they failed within 12 months.
