new campfire technique

To make a "cowboy candle" take a round of firewood, preferably about double the normal 16 inches in length. Stand on end and cut 2 or more slots similar to how you would cut a pizza. Cut about 3/4 of the way down. Harder wood requires more slots than soft wood. Squirt a little BBQ lighter fluid into the center then light. The slots allow air flow that will keep it burning. Works great! Here are a couple pics.

PS: You can set a pan or pot right on top of it and use it for cooking.

When we are cutting wood, we will fight over the hollow logs. In the evening, as the crowd grows around the campfire, we will stand the hollow "chimney" log on top of a bed of coals. The fire will soon be shooting out of the hollow center like a rocket. It is a pretty site. You need to be real careful if you are going to cook on it. It gets very hot. I ruined some good chicken like that once. :x

Living in Indiana, I have seen that guy on the local news. I am also a chemist. My personal opinion is that this guy is a nut. LOX scares me and I am not afraid to admit it. It has a bad habit of making things flammable or explosive that you would never think of being dangerous. However, I am a closet pyromaniac and those fireworks are awesome. I just dont have the stones to try it myself.

One of my friends sometimes brings a bowling ball cannon along on camping trips. It makes a big BOOM and shoots the ball several hundred yards. I captured this pic using the movie mode in my digital camera.

since this thread went to shooters,, try a search on back yard balistics,, or potatoe guns,,, these can be put together for les than 30 bucks and I can launch a inch and a half tater about 300 yards with aqua net hair spray,,

they make an impressive sound when fired off,, most campgrounds frown on them though,, dang it

heh heh heh That's why I was looking at trebuchet plans. A friend posted those vid clips on his website. I complained that it was a lame trebuchet. I like the size of the one you have pictured. That's probably the size I'd make. Not too big and not too small. I can stuff it up in the attic to store it.

My son and I basically look to launch things we have a air pressured potato gun that will shoot a 3/4" plug or paint ball 250' It took about an hour to make but it is way fun. Another fun thing to do is use your propane torch (unlit) to blow bubbles with near the campfire.

Here's another one that's good around the camp fire:

Get about 20' of 1.25" diameter clear vinyl tubeing at the hardware store. You'll also need a propane torch with a built in trigger type lighter. Stretch the tubing out between several people. Fill the tube with propane/air mixture from the unlit propane torch for a few seconds, then click the sparker. A blue flame front will woosh through the tube, while also making an interesting sound. You can also spark both ends at once so the flame fronts meet in the middle. Looks really cool in the dark or near dark. The tubing doesn't even get warm.
