road trip question...

Postby oklahomajewel » Wed Aug 17, 2005 11:11 pm

Hey all.... I am just in the very very beginning stages of my teardrop-to-be... you know, the paper stages! haha

But I was wondering.... has anyone been on a road trip and used the tear to sleep in overnight? I know WalMart and Truck stops are said to be a place to stay with your big RV , but I don't know if I would like that with a tear. KOA's etc are not always right where you want to stay. I think some Elk Lodge's or something welcome their traveling members.

I thought if traveling, I would welcome any tears to stop and park at my house, either stay here at my place or in their tear, but have a private, safe place to sleep in their tear.

Has anyone else proposed that ? I mean, asked for other tear owners say 12 hours away from home if they can park at their house for the night?

Just wondered... I am hoping the tear will allow me to do some traveling not just short weekend trips.

Thanks
Julie

Yes it has come up before and yes I have done it also. Glad to hear you are in the planning stages, it's nice to have a plan to go by in your build :D Thanks for the offer on a place to stay. We do the same thing here for anyone coming our way. Good luck on your build

Yes. That's one of the true joys of a teardrop, since to set up camp you don't really need to do anything more than park. On her maiden voyage from Virginia to Michigan and back I stayed the nights in between at the service plazas on I-80. Just pulled in between the "big rigs," climbed in the teardrop and went to sleep.

This year Dave & Kate McGrath's "Camp ADK Spring TearUp" and the TearJerkers' Hickory Run Spring Gathering were a week apart so I did both and stayed on teardrop time for the week in between. It was great! In the middle of the week, most campgrounds have at least some if not plenty of open sites. Weekends may be a pain - if you know where you're going it may be best to make Friday & Saturday reservations ahead of time.

Summer weekends are probably the biggest problem.. and, mid-week, don't wait to you pull in to get a site, call ahead about noon... gives you time to find another place if they are full, and it gets you in ahead of those that wait till the last minute.

Let them know ASAP the size of your teardrop. Many parks have the odd small space no one else can use that is perfect for a teardrop. They should give you a price break for them but I have never gotten one.
